It's on the right of the Civilian and Industry tab of the F2 Window. Click the "Shut Down" button on whichever industries you need to deactivate. Deactivation is instantaneous, but it takes some time to reactivate (180 days?).

Also if its fuel you want to deactivate because you have enough, you can disable fuel production only from the industry tab I believe. It takes no time to reactivate and simply stops fuel refining for a while. Useful if you run low on Sorium

what the flip is a CIWS and what does it stand for?
Close in-weapon system. It's a completely self-contained* gauss PD turret that can be mounted on commercial vessels without making them military vessels. They have a range of 10,000 km I believe and they can only defend the ship they're mounted on. They're only really useful on commercial ships, since you can mount more effective PD on military vessels that can also defend other ships.

*which means it also includes its own sensors

Close-In Weapons System. It's a self-contained point defense module that uses your best gauss, FC, and tracking speed tech, but is slightly large than an equivalent Gauss turret, and can't fire offensively, but doesn't need any management to function. You can think of them as future equivalents to Metal Storm weapons.

ah. so it's for ensuring things like dropships, cargo ships etc. actually get their cargo to wherever it is needed?
Technically, no.  It only defends against missile attacks and hostile ships may also use other weaponry...  A better defense would be the speed to GTFO...
Boarding ships probably would be better served with escorts.  Actually CIWS may be an ok investment for troop transports... escort is still better through hostile territory.

goddammit, now I want to know how to make my own system using the SM stuff.

looks good, anyway.

It's not easy. I've only been able to edit the types of stars present. I plan to find a nearby trinary system and regenerate it over and over until it's got something that looks interesting.

You just need some planets that can theoretically be terraformed and SM the atmosphere as needed (Create colony, "SM Set Atmo" to taste, abandon). Then you can "Create HW Minerals" or "Specify Minerals" as needed for initial resources.

I would think you would want your starting fleets to have at least *some* industry with them. Even with a doubled industrial bonus it seems it'd take you forever to get to where you could even launch a ship; let alone research.

Sounds like a promising ARR though! Are you leaving Sol in unlinked to discover at some future point (I guess as a conventional empire?).

I intend for this to be a Newtonian Aurora campaign. I have no idea when that comes out.

The Myriad in my LP game have a fun one. Three stars (with orbits close enough they're inside the planetary system), four cost 2 planets, two asteroid belts, hundreds of planets and moons and dozens of rich mineral deposits.

Considering what they're based on, it's really quite suitable.

Will the terrans, by chance, call it Home Hive One?  :P

On an unrelated note, I've just edited in Ceres and Eris to the Sol system by modifying asteroids! I can't say for sure, but they seem pretty stable, at least when starting the game. Steve should give us more options for editing in SM: The engine seems to handle the orbits, days, and years pretty well. It also seems to handle the type of planet and the Hydrospheres fine too.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.
