Took a look at this and starting to think it's like ArmA2 in space.

If you have the power for it, some of those scripts that spawn entire fleets on top of each other would make for the most amazing (visual/gameplay) experience ever if you're a tiny fighter maneuvering between capital ships, missiles, lasers, explosions...

God I miss my freespace and tie-fighter/rogue squadron days

I think I've found myself a challenge to keep myself occupied for some time.

Claim pirate sectors for myself and build up my trading empire there (haven't worked out the details yet).

One question to that.
Does it pay off trying to be the Space Fuel and Space Weed supplier for pirate bases?
Or is it much more profitable to set the prize below average price and wait for NPC traders in normal sectors?

Hell yes it pays off, and it's not really worth waiting for NPCs. In fact, I'd try setting it so that NPCs can't buy from the station, and destroy all of the other Space Fuel/Weed stations. That gives you a monopoly, and there isn't anything they can do about it.

Except build new stations, but now you've got to the point where you're considering carving out your own piece of space, you should know how to deal with that.

X3:TC is a stand-alone expansion, you don't need X3:R.

Edit, apparently steam decided to delete my X3:TC data for no reason...

Should also be mentioned that 2.6 just came out a couple days ago. Steam achievements, a new plot, and the TC Bonus pack. You have to download the latter seperately.

I bought it a while ago when it first came out.

Fun game. It's a really interesting space sim. Lots of freedom, lets you build complexes, manage fleets, etc.

The only problem is it had a few really annoying limitations that really ruined it for me.
1. Bad AI. Having a fighter wing escort you usually meant they would fly into stations you were docking with, crash into gates, fly into enemy ships, or even fly directly into you while "defending" you in a dogfight against enemy ships.

2. Shallow economy. It looks deeper than it is. Ships moving cargo, stations producing things from a complex series of raw materials, supply and demand, etc. It's all an illusion. Things are in actuality just poofed into existance when needed and removed when not needed. You can make a station in the ass end of nowhere producing more goods than the entire universe could consume but traders will happily pop into existance and buy it up endlessly. Some of it might trickle into trade depots, it might even make its way to a few factories - but even if you produce 100,000,000,000 of something you can still sell *all* of it as long as you price it affordably, and the factories on the other end of the universe will probably never actually get any of it since it will be destroyed or just removed somewhere along the way. I found this out while doing that horrendous hub quest. I had to manufacture an obscene amount of crystals and microchips and crap and then when I was done I had huge self supporting mega complexes churning the stuff out faster than every factory in the universe could possibly use it - but it was still being bought regularly and just making me endless credits, and the factories on the other end of the universe still never had any of the stuff in stock.

Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of fun. If it wasn't for #1 above I would play it just for the combat. Maybe one of these days someone will come up with a patch or mod that makes the ships smart enough to not crash into you while protecting you - if that happens I might go back to it. Small scale combat is still fun enough, it just has so much potential for great fleet battles if the flight AI wasn't so lousy.

As-is it's still kinda fun to fly between large enemy capital ships with a small fast fighter and just have them blow eachother up since they're dumb enough to fire their big anti-capship guns at you even though you're flying right between them and the shots will inevitably miss you and hit eachother. It's just kinda disappointing when your own capital ships do this just because they decided to fire at that little khaak fighter who flew by instead of the gigantic khaak destroyer bearing down on them with heavy beams.

Yeah, that.

Disappointing that the one day I was in Yosemite and unable to check my computer they had the sale on a game that I would have bought but as is- I remain "testing".

This game is really great because of the mods. Spawn huge fleets and having battles - or having the invasion mod really livens up the game. I love the feeling of flying a small fighter in between capital ships ever since my x-wing/tie fighter and freespace days.

If you want a cool fighter go over to Omicron Lyrae and buy the Nova Raider. It's the same price as a Nova but has 190 speed (Nova only has 150 if I remember correctly). Then kit it out with some Phased Repeater Guns for anti-fighter and some Energy Bolt Chainguns for taking out the bigger foes. I personally like having my main guns set up with 2 PRGs in the centermost slots and the rest EBCs.  Set your guns up so you can toggle the EBCs on and off, so you don't waste ammo on targets that don't need the firepower. With this setup you can fry anything M3 and below (especially good for tearing up those fast M5s that are hard to hit with other guns) with the PRCs and the EBCs will tear through larger ships like M6s with ease. You can even take out capital ships with them pretty well if you can avoid the return fire. The only downside is the ammo is a bit tough to get sometimes (especially since the factories often lack the required stuff), but you can usually haul a bit of stuff to them and just park a cargo ship there and keep buying up extra ammo as they make it.

Another great fighter is the Otas Venti, but its a pain in the ass to get. It has an extra shield slot and some more guns, also a bit faster. I don't think it was quite as maneuverable though. I think you have to do like a thousand otas missions to get one though haha.

So I want my own station. However, it seems that with the use of the RRF script, the Mammoths and such in station sectors have been renamed to Arenas and have the same icon next to them as civilians. When I hail them, there's no option to go about hiring them for station use.

Am I doing something wrong, or is the script to blame?

I havent played in a while, but sounds like the script.

I use RRF but I can still find mammoths called "Argon Mammoth" that will transport stations. There should be one in Argon Prime.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

I'm using RRF version 1.8.

I'm pretty sure EMP is the official script-pack that Egosoft puts out, featuring community scripts. It's got like the commodity logistics stuff. Should be somewhere around 10-15 scripts. It means you don't have to have the *modified* tag, i believe, as they are signed by Egosoft.

You are confusing the Bonus Pack and the Extended Mod Pack, Calhoun. The Bonus Pack is the "official" package. It has about 5 scripts that have been added into the game. They will not cause your savegame to go "modified" and as such, it will allow you to go for the Steam Achievements.

The Extended Mod Pack is more of an extra "wareslist". It was also intended to be a "modding base" because it would allow multiple new goods to coexist since the "references" to each ware was reserved for a certain modded ware. Quite a confusing mouthful, I know. But the EMP is not officially approved (or "signed") by Egosoft.
