I recall that it basically lets you move liquids over chasms and such. Like if you want to flood your fort base with lava, you need to make a magma-safe aqueduct or two, one to cross the chasm, and another to cross the cave-river.

For water I don't really think I ever could come up with a reason for it. I always thought it was necessarily only with lava.

Anyway, my memory of 2D is hazy, but I'm pretty sure it's like building a bridge in 3D, so you just select the materials, and it then builds the walls around the path for the liquid as well.

Well that helps alot. Are there any cheat engines to raise the amount of starting dwarves?

Yesterday you posted pretty much the exact same thread up in Gameplay Questions.  I think it might even still be on the first page.  Sometimes answers come quickly, but this isn't a chat room.  If your answer doesn't come immediately, that doesn't mean you should make another thread on another board.

You can't honestly expect we can all answer every question on such a dated version of DF.  The last 2d version was somewhere in the early 30s (32a?).  40d has been out for over a year...it's been a good while since 2d was out.  There's a few players that still use it, but you can't expect the general populace to know much about it.

I guess what I'm saying it, relax!  When you're asking obscure questions, you should wait more than ~12 hours for an answer and you probably shouldn't crosspost when you were on the correct board to ask on in the first place.

~~~
That being said, I don't much about 2d.  But I do know that if you wait and possibly bump your thread once every few days, one of those folk who do know will answer.
The last 2D version was 0.23.130.23a, released January 18, 2007, nearly 3 years ago; v0.28.181.40d was released September 6, 2008, well over a year ago.
P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
There's a slight distinction that perhaps needs to be made here - knowing something, and remembering something, are different things. There are quite a lot of us who played the 2D version but haven't touched it probably since the 3D version came out...you'll probably find that a surprising number will know the answers to many questions on the 2D version but may not remember it that well, so we can vaguely describe something but may not be able to go into any significant detail. At least, not without downloading and playing the game again in order to refresh our memories :P
There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.
