I prefer to cage them and put them on display.

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.

Step 1: Drain pipe of magma down to magma flow. 250 pumps are sufficient to accomplish this in about two dwarf weeks. Store drained magma in tank directly above magma pipe for fast refill.
Step 2: Breach pipe at second lowest level, position marksdwarves on edge.
Step 3: Urist McSniper took joy in slaughter lately.
Step 4 (optional): Proceed to construct self-sustaining iron fortress inside magma pipe, including necessary amenities like extensive farming, dining room waterfalls, obsidian factories, garbage disposal facilities and magma falls/trade depot. Wait for elves.

I'm a pretty huge noob (is there a way to get magma flowing down an external tunnel without going to the top of the pipe and channeling the square on the edge of the magma?), so I didn't know of the dangers/how to deal with fire imps. I just kinda let them be. Well, my first migrant wave passed right by the pipe and got torched. In trying to get the bodies, the rest of my dorfs were torched as well (by the time most of them had died though, I'd already flooded my fortress with magma for the lulz). I haven't played a magma map since :c

Quietust: how did you prevent the cave-in from killing the magma flow tiles on the bottom z-level?

Er, I didn't? Cave-ins don't kill the magma flow tiles.

After all this time it was that easy? Gah! That's what I'm doing from now on, then.

Step 1: Save and exit.
Step 2: go to the Raw files, specifically creatures_subterranean.txt
Step 3: find and remove the [FIREIMMUNE] tag
Step 4: Profit. 8)

I think it'd be better to just throw him in a pit.
By pit I mean "ledge designated as pit some 30 levels above the ground water magma" and that would,as they say be the end of that.
Unless a sword/axedwarf gets to 'em.. then it's rhesus pieces...

I once killed off a fireman and a few magmen by dropping water onto the top of the pocket and trying to hit them with the resulting obsidian.  It was pointless but fun.

Well, normally my fire imps sleep in the bottom of the pipe. I decided anyone badass enough to sleep in magma was worthy of living next to my fortress.

However, the Giant Cave Spider didn't.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

I have this thing for putting creatures in cages.

There's no reason NOT to keep them alive. Who knows the next time I want to set fire to something? Like a booze barrel in a nobleman's bedroom.
