Leave a progress note on shutdown
« on: February 01, 2008, 04:33:00 pm »

Simple thing when saving the game and quitting:

"Do you want to leave a note about what you were doing/planning?"

Great for when you miss a day or three, come back, and cannot for the life of you remember what the hell it was you were in the middle of doing. Note would display as an Announcement when you start it back up.

I could do that.. or I could not, and save a small tree, and avoid more clutter around the desk. I could also just open up a notepad file.. but that's one more thing to keep track of.

Having an in-game line of text pop up when I open the game up again is infinitely more useful to me. You're free to write it down, of course, it's not mandatory. -.-

I think that this could be more useful if applied more generaly, i.e., being able to leave notes on squares or in areas. This of course is also related to the several suggestions of lever naming and a few others. The bad news is that these "interface thingies" aren't coming around for a while. They'll maybe probably might possibly get in at some future time. Or not.

For the record, It's a good idea, just not an urgent one.

There should also be calendar, alarm clock, and radio functionality added in.

ok then nunix, here's a serious reply.  :D

I agree that this could be useful, however given the list of bugs to remove and things to still implement I doubt that this would score high on the to do list... since it would be more a convience thing that an improvement.

Well I didn't mark it priority or anything. It's just a suggestion, a minor feature request. Kind of surprised everyone jumped on it like that. -.-

I think that, in the long run, the ability to leave 'notes' in squares of your fortress would be very useful...  both to remind yourself what levers do, to remind yourself what you're doing, and as notes to the next person in a bloodline game.  You could identify areas, whatever.  Perhaps dwarves could even build signs for you...

But it doesn't seem very high-priority to me, no.

On the other hand, it doesn't seem like a very hard thing to implement. Perhaps Toady could squeeze it in with bug fixes in some minor release? As you said, this would be great for bloodline games, so I think that gains outweigh the effort.

OMG you dont need "Notes"! If you want notes create a text document titled Notes in the file with Dwarfortress, and passing it along bloodline wise would just be putting it with the save file. Also a plus to this is you can use 'Fonts', 'Colors' and have unlimited space because a DF-addition would only slow the game, be unreliable for mid-non playing editing and always leave one unhappy. Geeze!

Hahaha. I can just imagine picking up a fortress a few months later, laden with levers.

"Hm, what does this one do?"
*pulls lever, hears a 'squish' sound somewhere in the distance*
