The simplest solution for all that rock
« on: May 20, 2008, 08:45:00 pm »

Would simply be an option to "turn off" viewing of items or categories.

So you could designate rock as "invisible" unless it was in a stockpile.

If this was made into a proper game function, you could do the same thing for any item. Too many rock crafts cluttering up your old storeroom? Turn them off. Or coins, or worn-out clothing. You can still see it all in the Stocks screen, but unless the item is jamming a door or something, it's hardly necessary, gameplay-wise, to clutter up the screen with extraneous stuff.

This would be perfect for some people.

For those of us who enjoy building underground fortresses, it would be MADDENING.

Why would it be MADDENING? I mean, it would be on a menu screen to turn it on and off, so if you wanted to see your rocks you could.

That would certainly fix practically ALL my rock problems.

Sorry for the slight derail, but do all the rocks hanging around cause slowdown? That's my main reason for wanting to get rid of them but I'm not even sure if it's necessary. We're talking about a lot of objects but they don't really do anything but sit there so maybe they're okay?

Anyway, I've always wished there was a way to have my masons simply pulverize it all...

It shouldn't cause a slowdown except in extreme cases ie; Coperblazes, over 20,000 rocks, iirc.

As far as I know there's no practical, good reason to get annoyed at all the rock that clutters up a fortress. But it still gets annoying. For me it's a purely aesthetic issue.  :)

For me the problem IS purely cosmetic, i.e. I want to examine the cool engravings (i.e. the ones with dragons or whatever) but I can't tell which ones those are without using the K-menu to examine each tile.  Also they seem to sit "on top" of stockpile bins, which is annoying as I can't tell at a glance how big my stockpiles are.
