Interrogation
« on: February 15, 2010, 12:25:02 am »

Simple question, what do you guys believe is the best interrogation technique? I like being a little mean, then beating the shit out of them while sleep depriving them and not feeding them while they're tripping balls, then being completely nice to them. It works okay, I can occasionally get a CEO with this technique (and by occasionally I mean about 5% of the time).

Hmm... I used guitar squads a lot, and kidnapping is worthless when doing a pure guitar squad. Now that I've started using armed people more, I find the following technique pretty useful (note: high juice is very good here as usual)

  • Have all free characters interrogate. If I recall correctly this always put the best character for the job in charge.
  • If they have high wisdom, you may want to beat them for a day or two, but otherwise just recruit.
  • Consider leaving them unrestrained, because that can mean the difference between sleeper and no sleeper
  • Don't beat too much, they may die or commit suicide(if unrestrained), which hurts the lead interrogator's heart.
  • You may want to train with janitors and such before moving on to trying to have sleeper judges and CEOs

Brainwashing is more about numbers than technique. Get an maxxed juice liberal with as close as you can get to 20 charisma, heart and persuasion, then start training psychology skill on anyone with high heart and low wisdom. Musicians are good. With the above stats, once your psych skill is equal to your targets wisdom, and as long as you have comparable conversations skills (business/science/religion/law) to match whatever your target has, you should be able to convert every time with the default settings.

Does Charisma, Heart and Persuasion count during interrogations now?  I thought only the psychology skill and the business/science etc counted.  I was wondering why my psychology 17 people were having so much trouble getting sleepers.

Heart definitely counts, and I believe charisma and persuasion are utilized during option A.

Also, I just drug them and talk. Works like a charm. Sometimes I stop the drugs if they get clingly.

Clingly is good.  One conversion tactic is to get them to see you as their only friend.

That must be the flaw in my strategy then.  I was looking for hippies with a decent INT roll and 14 or 15 HRT cause I figured that would give them the opportunity to get really high Psychology in the end.  I pretty much ignored Charisma and persuasion.

Those hippies with INT and HRT are useful for breaking down the conservativism.  But once Heart and Wisdom of the automaton are roughly equal, switch to your recruiter.

That sounds like a good plan.  What about the "too terrified to speak to" result when you try to use the A option?  Is that related to anything or just the random fail text?  I was wondering if maybe the Cheney/Bush masks were scaring the prisoners, although last time JSF mentioned the mask he said they gave a bonus, but it was a number of updates ago.

I always use a different person when I switch from beating/sleep dep to being nice, but is there a fear residue from beatings despite person switch?

Tips for interrogation: if you can get Death Squad uniforms, use them prodigiously. You can see here (if you can read fairly explicit c++) that they give a bonus of 8 points to all interrogation, and 6 points for interrogation assaults (except, strangely, this value is never actually used - in interrogations at least).

If you are using drugs however, then a mask or bondage gear is definitely the way to go. You get a 4 point bonus to your drug use boost (the same as with a clown, elephant or donkey suit) with either 4 or 6 points added to your base interrogation ability. The 6 point masks are: Cheney, Guy Fawkes, Jason, Satan, Jesus and Bin Laden; the bondage gear is also 6 points. If you can get those masks they beat or equal all other costumes (excepting the Death Squad uniform) with or without drugs involved. If you can't find those masks or the bondage gear, use a lab coat, expensive suit/dress, black dress, police uniform, police armour, army armour, military gear, or a prison guard uniform. But, since you can buy bondage gear from the shops for $350, it's the best choice, really.

There is a lot of code for the interrogation section, which I may wade through at some other time. Essentially, the lead interrogator is chosen from all interrogators in the safehouse; they always have the highest preliminary interrogation score but if there is a tie it is chosen randomly. So if you have two interrogators with otherwise equal preliminary score you can swap their armour to make one a certainty. Rapport doesn't factor into who the lead is, so use one lead for any beatings and a different lead when you attempt to convert, otherwise you might waste a day with a lead who the subject hates.

TL;DR: use bondage gear, mass interrogators (reduces risk of escape, among other things), and switch to a new person for conversion if you beat them first.
