Item Quality question
« on: February 17, 2010, 10:47:14 am »

I just started playing adventure mode a few days ago, and I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for a week or two now.  I absolutely love this game.  It's a new favorite of mine.  I've managed to figure most things out, but I have one big question:

When I go onto the df wiki and look at the page on item quality, it only shows items being able to get one symbol at a time.  For example:
*Iron Long Sword*  or
=Iron Long Sword=
but in the actual gameplay I see items much more often that look like
*<<=Iron Long Sword=>>* or
+<<Iron Long Sword>>+

Can anyone explain what all of these symbols mean?

<<item>> means that the item is decorated. The symbols on the outside of the << only mark the quality of the decoration.

So <<+iron short sword+>> is actually going to be better for fighting than ☼<<iron short sword>>☼.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

Oh! I can see clearly now.  Thanks very much for explaining that, I was so confused.

You can turn off the outer set of marks in the init. They only affect value, not killing ability  :)
