[40d17] Lever can't be linked to raising bridge
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:54:50 am »

When trying to link a lever to a raising bridge, I get the message "There is nothing that can be linked up" instead of a list of unlinked bridges.

Are you sure there's a valid path between the lever and the bridge?  If so, does this happen in 40d/40d16 as well?  It's not the kind of thing that should be unique to 40d17, but you never know.

There is a valid path between the lever and the bridge. I've just seen a dwarf in the vicinity of the lever who only moments ago ran across the bridge to collect a rhesus macaque corpse that had been thrown to the other side of the moat.

I've just loaded the save into 40d16, and the task of linking the lever to the bridge was successfully added to the queue.

If it IS unique to 40d17, this report should probably go in the 40d17 thread, where it's more likely to be addressed in a timely manner.

Does this happen with levers and any other mechanical device, or just bridges?

This exact bug was already mentioned in the 40d17 thread in this post - the "b" key mistakenly got bound to both "bridge" and "floor bars", the latter of which is supposed to be alt-b.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I'll post the solution is in this thread as well to make things easier for others who encounter this problem.

To link levers to bridges in 40d17:
  • Save and exit your game
  • Open the interface.txt file found in your DF init folder (i.e. df_28_181_40d17_win\data\init\)
  • Search for the line "[BIND:HOTKEY_TRAP_BARS_FLOOR:REPEAT_NOT]"
  • On the line below you'll see "[KEY:b]", binding the floor bars to the same key as the bridge.
  • Change it to "[SYM:4:b]"
  • Save the file and restart Dwarf Fortress

Now the floor bars will be bound to alt+b as they should, bridges will be selectable from the lever dialogue and you can link away!
