Games, in SPAAAAAAACE!!!
« on: March 04, 2010, 06:06:11 pm »

Hey, I've been interested in space games for a while now, especially with the advent of SS13 and such, I've been hard-pressed to find another game like it with the same atmosphere of survival horror, and advanced physics working behind the scenes.

So come on out and list your favorite ones, or list some that you think might be similiar to this sort of gameplay style. (It really doesn't have to be in space, it's only preferable. I'm looking for a survival horror game with a flexible game engine, that's it.)
Please don't list these games. D:
Space Station 13 (For obvious reasons)
Ur-Quan Masters
ZAPM
Trancendence

Privateer: ASCII Sector

It's a ASCII game, which takes place in space. :)

Ah, The Ur-Quan Masters. A truly incredible game.

Anyway, I've heard good things about Aurora(it has it's own thread here) but I haven't had time to work my way through a tutorial and get started on it yet. It's like trying to play DF with EVERYTHING controlled by menu screens, drop-down boxes, etc.

rlprospector
not so much survival horror, but it's in space, and free, and is similar to at least two of those 4 you listed.

Eh, really unrelated here, but I'm afraid that it's only me. Are the steam servers down for you all? Because it's been like 2 hours for me...
EDIT: Nope, they're back online now. Nevermind.

On Warcraft III the Metastasis mods (preceded by the Parasite mods, and the Who da Vamp mods, and then a bunch of Starcraft mods) are pretty survival horror, and tend to fall into the same ultra grief showdown as SS13.

The Starflight games. From the age when the only thing games had were creativity and gameplay. Essentially an ancestor and inspiration of rlprospector. It's a survival game in that you'll die a lot.

Among other old games I'd also recommend Project Nomad and the B.A.T. games.

Dead Space. Critically acclaimed, shit-your-pants scary, and very good physics engine complete with zero-grav exploration and EVA suit vacuum action. Also some fun nifty physics-related weapons such as a gun that compresses air a foot away from the wielder then blasts it outward with explosive force.

If you want space survival horror, try System Shock 2.

You shouldn't need to run it in DOSBox if you're running XP. If you're running Vista, I'd be surprised if it were compatible. Try running it and your machine is likely to drop a shoe.

There are fan patches that update the textures and models. Makes it look pretty good, just no pixel / vertex shading or stuff like that. I actually prefer games without.

You could try System Shock 1 but the interface sucks because there is no mouse support. That is the single thing that prevented me from playing it, but it was important enough to be a dealbreaker.
