I don't know if I would call a place where children are systematically culled the 'perfect' fortress.

I don't know if I would call a place where someone uses Dwarf Companion to cheat the 'perfect' fortress.
It's more using Dwarf Companion to fix the cock-up I made in not changing the fortress birth limit. Seriously, I had like 70 kids of various ages. My FPS was through the floor.

I consider 10% a "high" ratio.  I kind of like 7%.

Hey guys, can I borrow some of your nobles? I've been sitting here on 110-odd dwarves for a couple years now, pumping out just about everything under the sun and boosting my wealth like a mad-man. All I have is the Dungeon Master. (Given, the DM is working like mad on all that goblinite for me and is nearly a legendary furnace operator.)

I believe the key to getting / not getting nobles is using / not using the administrator. IIRC you have to have certain number of work orders completed in a season for nobles to appear / get upgraded.

That's definately not it. I got up to the baron (which later becomes the Duke) in my first fort without ever using the job manager, because I didn't know it existed.

It is a certain number of jobs in different industries.  It doesn't matter if it is queue up manually or through the job manager.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Duke Nukem?
Don't do this. He'll be there forever and won't do anythin--...
wait, that's what they always do.

I thought the joke was that they would never show up?
Perhaps, but if you can name the Duke, he's already there. :-\

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

You need to create a variety of goods to get the Baron. Clothing, gems, and whatnot.

I think the wiki has the exact quote from Toady.

I thought the count will arrive if you reach his population requirement without hitting the baron's job demands? Or am I just being silly again? :-\

More than once, I've had a Baron show up, and be instantly promoted to Count.

So I think you're just being silly.  ;)

Duke Nukem?

He's here to make mandates and kill goblins.

And he's all out of goblins.

I have to wonder what's wrong with you if you kill yourself over the quality of a chair. But then, they are nobles. If I may reference statistics published by Urist McRecordKeeper IXV, nobles have roughly an 80% higher chance of suicide than any normal working dwarf does.

The exact nature of this phenomenon tends to elude the minds of common dwarves, but Dwarven Science has found that particularly shiny levers, which appear to be standard issue, increase this likelihood by as much as 60%. Almost all nobles' quarter's tend to have a manual waste disposal mechanism typically involving magma. Another standard issue affair, yet it appears to be the most common method of suicide among nobles.
