Bins & Coffers
« on: August 21, 2006, 08:34:00 am »

I've heard that bins can be used to save space in stockpiles, is this true? If so, what can and cannot be put in a bin? Can a Coffer be used to subsitute for a bin?

Coffers can't.

I've seen bins used in stockpiles for Finished Goods, and for Bars/Blocks. They work just like barrels do for food - save floor space by putting several things in that one square.

They're used for ammo and gems too. Possibly cloth, but I don't remember off the top of my head.

I think they work for everything but furniture, raw rock, and ore.

No wood, either. Gems, cloth and thread go in bins, though, and I have seen non-edible plants (pig tails) in barrels as well.

Is it possible ot make bins out of metal? I ahven't found the option, but I haven't meseed around with anything beyond bronze yet. Making a bunch of brass bins with my lava metal prodcution chain would be nice, since then I can ease the strain on the wood in the area.

I've said this just recently, but to recap:

The manual states that bins can only be made out of wood because wood is "cheap and light".  "Cheap" is a relative term, but "light" applies. =)

I think it would take more wood to make a bin out of metal than out of wood.  I think it only takes one unit of wood to make a wood bin, but if you were to forge a bin out of a likely material, say tin, you would be burning wood for charcoal, and you need charcoal for the smelting of the tin, and charcoal for the forging of the bin.  So it may take more wood to make a metal item than a wood item.  (Of course, I'm not sure how much charcoal you get per unit of wood, and apparently if you have coal you can get two units of coal bars from one unit of charcoal, so that is more efficient)

Now if you could make stone bins... hmm maybe from pumice?

Yeah, but stone bins completely remove the whole 'cheap and light' concept.

Well it keeps the cheap, and the light is why I recommended pumice (which will float on water).

Not if you use lava smelters and metalshops to make them. With lava, suddenly making anything out of metal becomes feasible (although still more time consuming than out of stone or wood, since you have to smelt the ore first.)
