I wouldn't mind an app that would read in the BMP that is output from the world generation, and expand and detail it. That would be pretty cool.

A really nice app would make it look like an old-time sailor's map.

You made a good attempt, but I still prefere Madays tileset. Your maptiles, though prety, have backgrounds that hurt my eyes when a lot of tiles are togheter. (For the record, I have the same problem with ASCI. The idea is great, but a solid black background with sparse characters, or a very cluttered background, strain my eyes)

Yeah seriously, what's with the speckles everywhere.  It's literally visual noise.

Or, by not attributing anyone, are you implying you made these tiles? (hint: You didn't)

Thank you. That sort of thing really irritates me.

I like the tileset by the way. I won't be using it myself, but its nice. :)

The speckles are a compromise between having a colored background and having none at all. With no background, areas around roads/rivers have too much empty space (since I'm using diagonals for corners). With solid backgrounds, tiles fit together nicely, but there's too sharp a contrast between tiles of a different color, so it looks blocky (which is hard to avoid, since it is a rectangular grid of tiles). The speckles fill in space, while also providing a smoother transition between differently-colored tiles.

Hmm, I see what you're hinting at. To aliviate the problem with speckles hurting peoples eyes, maybe you could try desaturating them and darkning them slightly, so the foreground stands out?

Looks good, except for the hills with the oddly colored solid backgrounds.  The people saying the ASCII maps look better are a little bit crazy, as usual.  Your version looks much more like what a fantasy world map should look like.  Keep working on it!

A fantasy world map should look like a piece of weathered parchment. That said I agree with your general sentiment, I just think Sizik has a long way to go to get it looking better AND as legible as the original ASCII.

That'd be a big ass CSV file. I wrote a PHP script to pull the map export data from the images. It filled up all 2Gb of RAM in my machine without even batting an eyelid. Toady does careful memory management things to stop this from happening during worldgen/export, I suspect.

It shouldn't be more than width*height bytes, I'd think, with one byte per tile.

Heck if you wanted to go fancy, you could do 32 bits per tile and only be 4 times as big: 257*257*4 =  264,196 bytes or roughly a quarter of a meg.

I know, the old maps really look terrible compared to this, right?
That is subjective, honestly I prefer ascii to this. it is a fine tileset, however I don't see the advantage of your tileset compared to the regular ascii code.
