Lol. That formula strongly implies that DF is getting worse with each new release version. Just so you know...

A/0.31 > A/1.0 for all A | A > 0

Yeah, I haven't thought that one through much. :P It's the best I could come up with in a minute.

edit: actually, I remember my reasoning now.

Dwarf Fortress*0.31=(Fable+(Sims+SimCity-ElectronicArts)*DungeonKeeper)^Rogue

Ergo, Dwarf Fortress*1.0=((Fable+(Sims+SimCity-ElectronicArts)*DungeonKeeper)^Rogue)/0.31

Just replace your divide with a multiply and it should be all good.

Wait hold on a sec.  10/.1=100, 10/0.3=33.33,  10*0.1=1, 10*0.3=3.
Okay so the math works out that the closer we get to 1.0, the better it is.
I.e. we get closer to the result of:

I meant to say that ((Fable+(Sims+SimCity-ElectronicArts)*DungeonKeeper)^Rogue) is what we have NOW. It'll be at least three times better than that by the time it reaches 1.0... which doesn't actually do it justice. :P

Behold. I call it the Desdi-Mirrsen DF Enjoyment Function.

Naturally, DF now varies exponentially to version, so how much the version improves DF depends on its base: the acceptable values for parameters fable, dungeonkeeper, etc. If their domains are [0,10] then v = 1.0 gives a  6-fold increase. Heh.

Actually, I've now come to alter the keybindings in such a way that there's always one key combo to exit any menu, Shift+Space, which is also set as the secondary binding for pause/unpause. Escape works as "exit all menus". That way, text entry never suffers, and Shift+Space is easy enough to press. Surely better than reaching for the Escape key every time.

My hands are by the arrow keys all of the time anyways so I just re-binded the Delete key near the numpad to exit out of a screen.  Still works and doesn't ruin my flow as much as Esc.  I still try to pause and unpause the game with it though.  :P I've still got that binded to space.

Now that you mention it, I can probably try the "\" key to exit. On my laptop, it's large and right above the enter key, so easily accessible and, unless I misremember something, not used anywhere at all in DF.
