Decaying Corpses and Bones.
« on: August 10, 2010, 08:42:54 pm »

I have a large mined out vein of coal I stuffed full of goblin and kobold corpses.  I read that in order to get bones now you have to deconstruct a skeleton in the butchers shop to get them now.

Problem is they've been "partial skeletons" for quite some time now.  How long does it take for these corpses to fully decompose so I can rip em apart for their precious bones?

Now. Partial skeletons are just that - pieces of skeletons. Perhaps they've been torn off the body in combat or the creature exploded from a 200z fall. Whatever the case, partial skeletons are the final rot of limbs and "mutilated corpse"s.

unfortunately; kobolds and goblins are sentient beings. meaning that the dwarves think it's unethical to butcher them unless you edit the raws.

only thing you can do is throw them away ... or feed them to a captive ogre or something

Nuts.  Guess I'll dump it then.

I need to remake my custom race for this version.  They were able to butcher and skin goblins, kobolds, humans, and everything else.  Goblinite was also a source of food!

You could just edit the raws like mentioned, the cannibalism tag on ethics department, I recall, was the one you needed to change.

Skin everything, recycle their meat as masterpiece meals, sell to traders. Make clothes out of the leather for your dorfs.

Recycling, it is a great thing to do, even with cannibalism.

I should change the tag myself. Dozens of invader corpses, have to get rid of them somehow. Might as well make a profit and return to the art of 40d, decorating my skull totems with bones of fallen enemies.

Is this for the latest version?  I didn't need to add cannibalism tag before.  Just modify the [eat_sapient_other] tag to yes.

I'm pretty sure it works for the latest version, I played 31.10 or something with cannibalistic kobolds so I figure it wouldn't have changed.

And it probably was that tag, can't remember everything these days.

My bone carvers have been using a few goblin bones for things recently, I think it just takes a very long time for the bodies to naturally decompose.  Certainly several years.

On at least one occasion I have seen a dwarf in a strange mood go to the refuse pile and pick up a partial kobold skeleton to use as a source of bones.  So it appears that for strange moods at least skeletons of sentient creatures can be used.
