Never heard of 'Wrex' but 'Williams' I've heard comes from 'Williamson' a common alternative to profession-naming was naming after the father. Hence surnames like 'Johnson' and 'Jackson'. In many Eastern naming traditions, it's largely the same surname format. Profession, Town That Family Has Lived In For A Long Time, Son of Father's Name, Name From Religious Scripture or Stories or National Heroes, etcetera.
