I can´t speak for Red Jackard, but in my opinion it would help finding possible problems quicker if status icons showed up next to the dwarf´s name. In the interest of a better overview they may have to be reduced to only the most important icons for the respective tab, as otherwise it will flood the screen with too much information, hence becoming useless. For the civilian tab I´d suggest limiting the icons to migrants, severe thirst or hunger, unhappyness, tantrums, moods and injuries. (sleep shows up as current task anyway). I recon it could look like this:

1. column: migrants, allows better organization once migrants arrive.
2. column: thirst
3. column: hunger
4. column: (one of) unhappyness or tantrumicon when it turns really bad.
5. column: (one of) moods (possessed, fey mood) and eventual failed ones (insane, melancholy)
6. column: (one of) minor/major wounds. The military tabs on the other hand might have better use for more combatoriented icons, like beeing unconscious, stunned, prone, winded, enraged etc.

Red Jackard:
Yes, the icons are what I was thinking.~Either those, or capital letters for the most important states: Hungry, Thirsty, Unhappy, Wounded, MigrantStrange Moods have no need of one, since they show up on the jobs column. (Although it would be good to see 'Insane' pop up there afterwards instead of 'No Job'.)[ November 25, 2007: Message edited by: Red Jackard ]

I'm for the first post.

Something like this would be a good idea, but personally I'd organise it slightly differently. Have four main tabs: Fortress, Fortress (deceased), Other, Other (deceased) on top. Then in each fortress list, have expandable headings for each of the main job categories:code:
(+)Miners
(+)Carpenters
(-)Masons
  > Id Olinkot
  > Mosus Etruagen
(+)Trappers
.
.
.
(+)Children
(+)Military
(+)Nobles
(+)Fortress Guard
(+)Royal Guard
