I mostly go with orchestral or celtic music, which is pretty much what I listen to with everything else as well.

I've always been fine with the original music that came with it. It's endlessly fascinating, and somehow it isn't repetitive for me...

But like another poster said, some gradually changing themes or melodies in response to the fortress's status would be awesome.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I was listening to Johnny Cash's The Baron and it seems to fit - wish my Baron was as useful. ;)

I wish I had of known you when you were a little younger 'round me you might have learned a thing or two
If I'd had known you longer you might be a little stronger
Maybe you'd shoot straighter than you do, maybe you'd shoot straighter than you do. ...

Billy Joe looked edgy, about to lose his cool
But the Baron's hands were steady as the two began to duel
Yeah, he was like a General on a battlefield of slate
And he would say to Billy Joe each time he sunk the eight, he'd say...

I'm still assembling my penultimate playlist for Dwarf Fortress and it's currently limited in tracks.  I constantly reach out and explore similar genres and other games to find tracks that fit DF fairly well and I think the current playlist isn't a bad one by any means.

My usual playlist for DF is:

Myth 3 - Dirge
Medieval: Total War - Arab Strat Summer
Myth 3 - Journey (Cello)
Myth 3 - March (Erhu, then Cello)
Richard Searles - Robin Hood and the Tanner
Myth 3 - March (Fiddle)
Medieval: Total War - Euro Strat Winter
Medieval: Total War - Arab Mobilize 1

I'm considering adding Caroline Dale's "Merlin's Hat" to the list among a few others.

Hooray for Kirby songs! I had Butter Building replacing the .ogg file for a while there, so whenever I started up DF, it would play Butter Building. =D

I find Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" rather fitting to play whilst a new fort is getting itself established. I think I'll record my first year in a new fortress  after the next update and edit it into a montage with that in the background.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

To me, fugues played by horn suit DF perfectly.

Hurr, celtic punk!

Korpiklaani for me. Works nice with the happy (drunken) folky sound.
