Well, I made myself a maul-specialist and generated a new world for 'em. First thing I see? Dwarves and elves crammed into the keep room I spawned in. They aren't even killing each other! I decided to get my stuff and get out. Aforementioned 'stuff' amounted to a quiver for water (because 100 units of water is ungodly heavy and 20 is enough) and a silver warhammer. Silver goes well with red.

Well, it appears I'm off to find and retrieve an artifact... shoe. A small cotton shoe.

Just to let you know, Mauls are terrible weapons. If you want a big smashy weapon, go for literally any of the Maceman weapons (Maces, Flails, Morningstars). Mauls are unusually slow in their programming, and since they're programmed to be low-contact blunt weapons, they manage to perform worse than their smaller counterparts in Warhammers, and are outperformed in velocity and size by Maces and Flails. Just an fyi to save you the headache of taking even longer to kill things.

Yeah, I know they're awful in vanilla, though I'm using that lucelle weapons mod plus some tweaks of my own. Mauls work at 3:3 speed in my version and I unwittingly ended up a creature large enough to wield them one-handed.

Not sure why contact area being lower would be bad on any weapon though; concentrated and multiplied force with the biggest weight you can comfortably is how PSI and thus devastating attacking works, right? That's the idea I've been working off of and it seems to be demonstrated strongly by two-handed swords which tend to take limbs off before they cut them in my experience. Or does contact area not divide the force imparted in DF?

Also, what I really want is a weapon that can send people flying once I'm strong enough, and I've been directed to mauls for that purpose.

Update on the adventurer's goings-on...
Found wine elementals (spellcrafts) and murdered them on the way to the 'Artifact Boot'TM and found a dragon guarding the entrance. I decided to fight it and actually managed to win by slowly beating it in the head/chest with that warhammer. Second fight and I've killed a dragon! Cost one of my companions their lives though, but he hacked it in the back of the neck and rendered it paralyzed from the neck down before being violently torn apart for his impudence via biting. Inspuz's sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Nice on the mods. As for weapon SCIENCE, as far as I understand it, vanilla Mauls have small contact areas, but lack severely in the velocity department to perform well as small contact blunt weapons. Small contact Blunt weapons like Warhammers and Whips excel because their high velocity allows them to hit hard and deep into the target, breaking bones and bruising internal organs. Large contact blunt weapons like Maces and Flails are unlikely to break bones outside of those of small creatures or small bony parts of humanoids (hands, feet, etc), but excel in smashing, pulping, and exploding things into gore with their massive weight and force.

Vanilla Mauls' size and contact area are suited for a low contact blunt weapon, but their unusually slow velocity makes them function more like large contact ones... despite the fact that all Mace-type weapons are larger, heavier, faster, and harder hitting than Mauls... I had a high level Hammer Adventurer that started using Mauls, but I kept finding that fights were lasting MUCH longer, most of my blows only managing to bruise muscle and fat if the target was large or had even the slightest amount of clothing or leather protection on its body. Switch to Warhammer and I'm tearing brains and shattering ribs with ludicrous ease. Hopefully they get fixed some day...

Hope your mods work out for ya, lemme know when you start sending people flying more than 2 squares   :P

Will do, though it only really takes one tile of flight to !!SPARTA!! or wall-splat people, more is just ease.

Dug up the raw for mauls I'm using... low contact area, 3:3 speed, penetration which I'm not sure matters for blunt weapons, and 2x velocity mult.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm thinking about shifting them to 2:4 since how great-weapons can be used is you lever them from a stance position into a surprisingly fast attack (think pulling down on the handle while lifting up with the shoulder as you step forward and catapult the maul-head onto some poor sod), making for low start-up and long recovery because you have to get that monster back into a lever-able stance.

The contact area for the maul is huge by blunt weapon standards - war hammers have 10 contact area, with the same 2000 velocity. Maces have 20 with 2000 velocity (they're also double the size of war hammers). Penetration doesn't matter for blunt weapons, that is correct.

So the issue is that mauls have too high of a contact area, but without additional velocity - so their attacks have a similar force but spread over a larger area, which makes their attacks mostly uneffective.

Vanilla whips have the opposite issue. They have a contact area of 1, with 5000 velocity, which is why they're so damn powerful.

Well. I returned that wayward shoe and I'm thinking I should find a flask and go vampire hunting (so I can try bottling their blood for back-pocket reasons). While I hunt one down, I'll bandit/vermin (read: kobold) hunt and get that all cleared out.

As for the weaponry stuff. I tweaked their raws again, nerfed whips a bit, screwed with some attack speeds, particularly for two-handers, and tweaked mauls' contact area and velocity multiplier. Also mauls can be made of stone now because who doesn't want a big rock on a stick?

Also, gave the swiss army knife longsword a murder stroke for smashing people with the crossguard.

Due to modding shenanigans, I had to wipe saves. Twice.

Now I'm in some cold semi-desert region with a monitor lizard man in a batman civilization. It's pretty primitive, almost no metal anywhere. I made myself a limestone maul and a bunch of dingo bone/leather armor. Now I'm running around grabbing bandits and kobolds with my bite to hold them down for their mauling.

Speaking of, I tweaked mauls again and they seem about right now.

Well learn something new today, if you ask someone about a fire breathing forgotten beast you some how convince to join you, chances are they might hurt the beasts feeling by calling them a dangerous beast, then get roasted by them in retaliation.
also Wolves will ambush you in trees and drop wolves are a thing, took me a while to realize the forgotten beast Ino jump up a tree to burn the wolves out.

Hmm, maybe thats whats been happening all those times i get ambushed and literally couldnt find what was ambushing me.

My adventures recently involved travelling far to the south to recover more books from towers. I even found one that contained a couple of deformed sorcerers on top of the air summoners. Im not sure how that happened.

I've been doing a fun/challenge run of a character with no weapons. Only strikes, kicks, biting, grappling, and the occasional shield bash are my forms of offense. Only times a weapon touches my hands is to butcher a corpse or to disarm an enemy, before tossing it back at their face. My only companion started as a spear user, but got their arms injured in our first battle. They have since healed and I gave them their weapon back, but they refuse to use it anymore, so I guess I've rubbed off on them.

Said companion was flashing when I first met them, so I gave Legends a glance, and they had quite the life. Started as a farmer, moved and became an Armorer and got married. Then became bored after a decade and started wandering as a soldier for hire. Their only kill before joining me was a Were-rabbit (who also had an interesting story of his own, once the King of a land, but driven by his own hubris for wanting immortality), so I guess that's how they became an important historical figure.

... So, I went for a swim in a lake to build up some muscle, and tell my companion to wait for me at the shore. I'm not even gone a lap across and back the lake, and I return to see they have somehow drowned at the edge of the lake. I can only assume they tried chasing something into the water, considering they were trying to pick a fight with an Ibex before my dip...

Killed a dragon, stole the artifact bow and shirt it had in its cave. Learned some secrets.

Then i decided to play with minecarts and bashed my head in upon colliding with a hill
