What music fits DF best? And why?
« on: December 09, 2007, 05:42:00 am »

I think the music from the main menu of Halo fits DF best because the monkish chanting sounds like dwarven priests praying to Armok.

Most anything with accoustic guitar makes me think of DF.

This in particular, makes me think of DF. Like I said in IRC a while back, all it needs is the sound of picks in the background, and it would be as perfect as possible.

Mm, yeah. Slow and melancholy guitar tracks all the way. For to capture the "lonely mountain" feel.

I can't really pin any one soundtrack down on it. Played it while listening to Baldur's Gate, Beowulf, Halo, The 13th Warrior and many more.

The Tomb of Raithwall from FF12 is a fun track to have in the background on repeat.

Shadow of the Colossus was amusing during a Bronze Colossus attack.

This song is not really something I listen to in the background while playing, but it so reminds me of dwarf fortress for some reason. Don't speak Finnish, though  :)

Just ignore the video: (although it actually fits in some sense)

I always have short scenes of partying, beer drinking, chandelier riding, tantruming, goblin smashing, dwarf smashing, cave-in-causing, demon fighting, cheese eating dwarves in my head  :)

All I can think of is a dwarf with a mohawk :P
Btw, flutes should be a requirement for all DF music...!

The music that came with the game.

As you journey to the center of the world, feel free to read the death announcements of those dwarves that suffer your neglect.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

Dwarf fortress makes me think of various songs from the Arcanum soundtrack for the most part. 'dwarven music' of course being one of the best.

BUT, when the fort cranks up the metal working industry, I always think about the "Plane of Innovation" song from Everquest: Planes of Power. I couldn't really find a link to it up on the internets though  :)

See, with every game I play, I extract the soundtrack. Therefore, I have a modest collection of random tracks from vague games. I just kind of stuck all of the ones that echoed themes of industry, mountains, and peace in a row and listen to them.

As my DF crashes if I so much think of starting up another program at the same time, the default music. I find that I miss it loads when I turn it off.

I listen to death metal, dance, classical, or country when playing. They all fit the mood.

Or opera, that is really fun, listening to Wagner while playing DF. On a turntable, no less!!

(that is a record player for you kids. =p)

I just noticed that the music from Stronghold and Stronghold 2 (Crusader notsomuch) both fit rather nicely, particularly when playing a human fort.

This song is very appropriate for Dwarf Fortress because it's actually about seven dwarves. Seven dwarves mining, no less.
