Quote from: Notch
I already have mostly working DOOM level importer written, and it’d be really interesting to be able to load Dwarf Fortress levels, if Toady One would be OK with that.

The permission-asking in question.

I'd say more about sales but it seems we've finally got back on topic.  :P
Then why would he post in his blog that he needs to ask Toady.

I mean seriously, Toady may be busy, but he's got pretty darn good turnaround on messages sent to him. Something that takes a simple yes/no should be seriously easy to get a response from him, unless there was more to it.

Edit: Another aspect of this, he can just make it robust enough to take any kind of standard graphical image and skip the whole entire issue. .bmps are already automatically exported from Dwarf Fortress. We aren't talking about propitiatory software. We are talking about taking an output and converting it to something else. All it needs to do is recognize basic patterns in that output, which in itself isn't propitiatory either, as long as that recognition is made by him and not stolen from somewhere else. It'd have the advantage of allowing people to make their own maps from scratch as well.

I believe he really is asking for more. A Direct to Minecraft, not a processed image. Something that would either require more work from Toady, or require release of propitiatory information to him. Not the kind of request I think that should be looked on favorably.

Maybe he's a shape-shifting reptilian working for the Illuminati to assassinate Toady because he knows who really killed JFK... or maybe since you know absolutely nothing about Notch, you decided to just launch into some absurdly cynical and paranoid conjecture about his sinister ulterior motives.

Incidentally, I feel horrible. I used a keygen for one of my favourite indie games. I know it's heinously immoral, but the game is just that damn good, that I'd break national and international laws to play it.

When I get enough cash, I'm going to send them a vast cheque to make up for all their games I've stolen, along with a vast cheque to Toady (armok be with him) for a game that he could reasonably charge for.

World of Goo?

Hey, speaking of sending money to Toady, does he have a Paypal account?

First of all, that was a fairly huge necro. But, to answer your question, Tarn does have a PayPal account. You can donate to it by hitting the "PayPal -- Donate" button on the main page, or just by following this link

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.

4 months isn't a huge anything unless you've been on the internet for less than a year.

And yeah, I found the donation page, and sent it.

I'm not sure what that is even supposed to mean, but I have to agree that necroing this was really unnecessary, this thread would have been on around page 50 and you had nothing relevant to add to the discussion. There are plenty of more relevant threads to ask about paypal in.

Dragging up an old corpse topic!! If an official "hug" can happen between DF and Minecraft then I say it should be! And earlier in this post, talking about Notch having made 108k euros so far :P Its gone a bit beyond that :P

Currently, as far as I'm concerned anyway, Minecraft is still a pretty static and non-evolving place.. All kinds of action can occur, just not very fast and only with gigantic complex mechanics set up.. Any feature of Dwarf Fortress dropped into (vanilla) Minecraft would easily spice it up..

Minecraft needs !!FUN!! and !!SCIENCE!! instead of XfunX (This is a fun. It menaces with spikes of normalcy and bands of repetetition. On it is an engraving of an unchanging landscape in dirt, stone, iron ore, gold ore, redstone and coal. The craftsmanship is of low quality.) and XscienceX :P

(Honestly its not low quality, I've blown up a couple hundred blocks of TNT all at once and got no freeze, basically had no crashes at all, made a world with the new flatland settings options that poured giant columns of water down from the (dark) sky through holes in a single stone layer, all kinds of good fun.. But it could be better just by creatively recycling the current content)

Needs unique random supermobs (icy skeleton, flaming zombie, fast creeper, giant creeper, furious mother pigs are a few ultra-simplistic examples), raids based on your bed location (even a simple skeleton archer invasion sounds pleasant..), some nice volcano action, some meteor strikes, wind storms that push the character (maybe even a tornado that damages weak building blocks/glass/trees..)

Craft the hug! CRAFT THE HUG! It will menace with spikes of beard :)

Actually I'd argue that minecraft is a very low quality game. The concept is definitely not original, the creator himself acknowledges that it's badly programmed, and every other update introduces a game-breaking bug (not danger rooms game breaking, but "you can't play anymore" game breaking).  Either the new developer(s?) is too lazy, or they're having problems understanding notch's work too. As of today, notch has probably made a few million euros off of minecraft, having hit 1m sales while he was still only developer with every copy costing 10-20 euros each.

Minecraft and dwarf fortress are nothing alike, except for the voxels. Plus, you get all the people who can't even figure out how to craft items spamming the bay 12 forums. Not to mention certain DDOS attacks on minecraft...

I don't have anything against Notch, I have something against the fact that minecraft probably makes more money in one day than dwarf fortress does in a month.

Yep, filthy rich by now :) Loads and loads of merchandise and its probably selling better than ever :| Maybe Notch should make a nice chunky donation towards DF development if he's such a fan and Minecraft's expressionless landscape is born from DF :P

While waiting on someone to reply I thought that the villagers in Minecraft need a nice load of daily duties.. Home building and actual professions that have them out harvesting or planting or mining too (but after harvesting/planting/mining/fishing/building/gathering animals/storing loot/being guards, they would be jobless, and I can't think of much more they could do..)

I don't know.. It needs some kind of growth :|

One of Minecrafts flaws to me has always been that they never doubled the amount of wool colors, knowing even early on how much pixel art was being done :| Pretty unimportant, but to me it showed a lack of intuitive thinking.. Can learn all you'd ever need to know about which way to go with development by hitting the forums :P Also been wanting dye-able beds and glass doors/stairs forever too :|

Jesus, what is wrong with people...
If such a thing were to happen, it would be cool, and have absolutely zero impact on DF players.  But you're so far up your own ass that you can't stand the idea of someone having fun in a different way than you?
Minecraft is very cool, its giant worlds and tons of crafting options are tons of fun for a lot of people, as evidenced by the very fact that people are willing to pay for it, and if the creator of an indie game has managed to make lots of money off it, good for him.

If you don't like it, don't play it.  If minecraft is low quality, what exactly is good quality, in your opinion? Does it just piss you off that it can be played multiplayer, and has 3D graphics, which are SO mainstream.

I used to play it quite a bit, and then I got bored.  Just like DF.  Just like every game ever.  When a new version of DF comes out, I'll play it again.  Same for minecraft.  Can't there just be two different things which are both good, for different reasons? If I could have a cool world in DF, then import it to minecraft, that'd be pretty neat.

/Rant

I would think a DF to MC conversion would require at least a 2x2 MC tile for each DF tile, since DF has a seperate floor and wall layer per tile, as well as making an up/down staircase usable.  Most DF stone types would convert to MC stone.  Ores would either convert to an equivalent ore, or into stone.  Same with gems.
Really, it doesn't seem like there's any overriding technical issue why it couldn't be done.

It pisses me off that it's extremely buggy/laggy/inefficient while remaining quite simplistic. It pisses me off that it makes more money than Toady can dream of. It pisses me off that while everyone has heard of minecraft, few have heard of dwarf fortress.

There's a lot wrong with people, actually. We tend to take things to extremes when arguing and ignore the fact that there's normally a middle ground. We're overly defensive hypocrites that wonder why the person we just insulted is so offended. And most annoyingly, we don't care about who's first, right, or even better- only who screams loudest.

Way to pacify me with reasonable statements... jerk. :P

You are of course correct, the internet runs on hyperbole...

Toady could make tons of money if he wanted to. The fact is, Toady's making the game as his life's artistic work.  The fact that he's able to live off that is wonderful.  If he wanted to sell out, or even look toward making more money, he could, but that's not what he's trying to do.

Notch wanted to make money, and make his creative game.  Minecraft is still far more complex than most 'mainstream' games, but it is much simpler than DF.

I see both as very inspirational.  In the days of EA buying every game franchise and ruining it, I just don't think we should be picking on the 'big' little guys.

I know what you mean- minecraft is definitely not the worst example of a bad game in any way. It just seems wrong that some servers seem to make more in donations than toady does.

Damn, this thing is still kicking after nearly 2.5 years? Who'da thunk it? And who failed to THUNK it?

There was a DF>Minecraft map converter for a while. I believe, though, that it is outdated on both the Minecraft and DF ends. So, damn...
