DF Accelerator (obsolete)
« on: April 01, 2010, 07:33:22 am »

The d# series HAS been merged now, so this is once again obsolete. Grab a non-legacy version when you download.

=====

Since the d# series hasn't been merged yet, I figured I'd dig up my old DF Accelerator code.

It appears to work fine with DF2010; I've been using it in the beta without trouble, and it does speed things up a bit.

So. Go to http://brage.info/~svein/df_accelerator/bin/, download opengl32.dll (and nothing else!), and put it in your DF directory, then set partial-printing to YES:0 and turn the intro off.

If it works, great. If it doesn't, remove it. I am not going to field any support questions or try fixing bugs now, but the proper d# merge should start soon.

Effect on gma965, 1.6 c2d laptop:
from 10-11 fps jump to 65-70 fps(!) in fullscreen.
from 9-10 fps jump to 21 fps in windowed.

Did not test on desktop, yet.

Conclusion:

If it works, great.
This is great, Sir.

Err, this appears to have turned most grey tiles blue (ingame text/announcement text/whatever other tiles, including main menu text, intro tiles, etc, but not quit/save-related text). Removing the file sets the colour back to normal.

But yeah, a great help.

It doesn't work at all for me, it just messes up the main menu with a cross between the last intro movie and the actual menu.
It has vertical blue stripes down it too.

I feel bad for not realizing how important the 40d# work was now.  I'm seeing a 4-5x increase in fps here!  Totally worth having everything turn blue.

Everything turned solid blue for me except for two horizontal stripes at the top and roughly halfway down. I guess I'll just deal until the d# stuff is merged back in. :/

I kinda like the blue tint.
Also, I got about 15 or so FPS increase, which is nice.

So, this takes my title screen FPS down from 150 (my cap) to 0. I didn't get any further than that. Any established trends in what sorts of computers tend to do poorly with this (and 40d#, for that matter, as they slow down too)?

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

correction(!):
So, actually, from 11 fps at beginning i was able to set df2010 running with 80-100 fps finally(situation after embark) while fullscreen.

11 fps default
~45 fps with added accelerator
~65 fps after setting [G_FPS_CAP:20] and accelerator
~85-100 fps with priority above normal, [G_FPS_CAP:20] and accelerator

Let's wait for d#.
