So... crops, anyone?
« on: April 01, 2010, 10:51:36 pm »

Am I doing it wrong? I'm trying to make some farm plots in the new version. they build the plots, but no crops are listed? What'm I doing wrong here? It's in a sand layer, underground. Do I need to flood these now? If so. aurgh! Heh.

You need to use irrigation to grow anything anywhere.

Or dig to the natural caverns. It's a bug. Try butchering.

Not a bug. Underground crops have to be irrigated now, even on soil. Basically, pour water on them, make them muddy.

I never thought it was supposed to be a bug, just another added difficulty. Anyways yeah just dig down one Z-level, set up your farm plot near a pond then dig through to the pond so it spills out over the plot, bam you have mud.

It's a bug. Soil is still supposed to work. But irrigating apparently works.

lies, lies, lies  ;D

Not being able to build a farm on top of soil is actually a bug; that should get fixed soon enough.

Toady's delirious from sleep deprivation now, though, and I'm not much better. Might be awhile, but hey, at least we got the site up and running again. :)

you can always pretend it's harder by only farming on rock like a properly manly dwarf.

I kinnda think he should keep it this way, I love when games create problems that you have to engineer around.

This has been the best playthrough of DF ever, for me.  I realized that you cannot make crops without mud, and I didn't feel like an irrigation system.

So I dug down deep.

I had to restart four times, because the muddy caverns are unforgiving.  I couldn't understand the military screen at first, so I just tried to wall off everything as fast as possible.  Too bad that a monster got through my barricade.  Down to five dwarves now, but I just got a farm up!  This is like playing the 2d version all over again  :D
