As above, how do I get deep underground in adventurer mode?

You can dig a shaft to the underworld in fortress mode, then abandon and find it in Adventure mode. Also, forgotten beasts occasionaly escape an you might get quests to kill them.

Yeah, getting quests will mark some caves on your map, these can be used to gain access to the underworld. The cave entrances are a bit more tricky to find now though.

Everything seems so huge down in the depths though - I'm worried I'll get lost.

You almost certainly will get lost. so remember to bring food and water.

The best thing to do if you get lost is to go up a few Z-levels, look for the "rampwell", then work your way back from there to your current location or a nearby landmark.

You can eat vermin in caverns, and there's usually quite a bit of water. Even if you can't find water, you can carry around blood, then throw it at a wall to get infinitely more. You can drink blood.
