A small coal mod.
« on: April 05, 2010, 05:30:16 am »

So, to demonstrate how amazing the syndrome system is, I cobbled together this little mod that adds coal dust to bituminous coal and lignite veins.  If your miners breathe the coal dust, well, they have a good chance of contracting black lung, a slow-acting and irreversible syndrome!

Just copy the spoilered text into a new text file, inorganic_blacklung.txt, and put it into your raw/objects folder.

This could conceivably be used to represent anything from gas pockets (with a high temp, so it causes burning!) to asbestase to radiation poisoning, if you've got a scifi bent.

Awesome. And this proves what inorganic materials can have syndromes attached and working.

Now these "dust clouds" are put to use!

Mind if I use it in Genesis mod I am remaking right now? Now I want to include other effects to different stone types. Disposable miners for the win!

Have you run tests to confirm that it works? I hate to be a skeptic, but a picture of a dwarf suffering from black lung would be nice.

I tested the black lung syndrome itself in the Arena, and a seperate syndrome ('warpstone burns') from  a mined rock in another - give me a few minutes and I'll have a screenshot.

EDIT: Here we are.  I can't work out how to display the actual syndrome name in Fortress mode, but I took a couple of screenies of his health and wound screen.

I commend you on a job well done. The name might not be displayed because you need a medical dwarf to Diagnose it, but I can't be sure.

Let it be known from here on out that Lofn, Bringer of the Black Lung, has ushered in a new era of underground misery. Hail Lofn!

Oh dear.  I think that repeated exposure to the same contagion results in speeding up the first one.  My test miner got another dose and his lungs and heart immediately failed, killing him within minutes.

As a sidenote, did you know that 'Cannot Breathe' shows up on the health screen if they don't have lungs, but losing your -heart- doesn't have a negative effect?

Drop the severity, maybe? If it's at one, it'll only start to really hurt veteran miners.

I dropped the severity right down to 20, so it should be somewhat less lethal - I'll do some more testing once I finish editing this article.

This is pretty cool! I love it, Lofn!

Heh, thanks!  I'm glad you're enjoying being a ruthless industrialist. <_<
