Micro-maps.
« on: December 16, 2007, 06:29:00 pm »

After I get a big fortress I find that the game is running slower then I would like.  I still have plenty of room left on the map though, so I propose that it should be possible to have 2x2 or even 1x1 "tile" wide maps in order to let the game run faster.

3x3 is fairly small, but I don't see a reason to have a minimum.  It would be more useful to have options to limit your Z-levels to +/- 2, there is a lot of space used by Z-levels.

Right, especially where there are chasms and mountains and the z-levels get unnecessarily big.

I propose the ability to dynamically expand the map in addition to these suggestions! That way, if you start on a tiny map and run out of space, you can expand if you're willing to take the performance hit, without reclaiming!

I mean, those of us who've used reveal.exe know that DF already dynamically allocates some underground spaces based on what's designated to be mined out...

Sounds good to me.  Can come in around the time that dynamic viewport does  :)

I didn't do 1x1 because I didn't want to worry about the viewport right now.  The view can be 78 across in dwarf mode, and a 1x1 would only be 48 across.  Also, 48 is just... small.

I think there are some gameplay problems associated with 1x1 maps. Such as sarting out on a major river. These can reach 47 across which means you have to start in the middle of the water. Also I could see people staring out on a magma then complaining that they dont have anywhere to build because there is a 1 tile brim around the vent and they cant dig into it.
