A military stopgap: the dwarven pig?
« on: April 08, 2010, 03:21:15 pm »

To quote Toady, "the military is crap", so in the meantime I'm going to create an animal that can guard me from the monsters of the deep, as well as the newly super-sized goblins. This is my first go-round... I've tried to go for the following features:

1. males and females same size until year 1, when females begin growing quickly
2. females have horns, which they will use to attack with
3. males won't try to attack with horns, which they don't have
4. animal is butcherable for shell (and meat, of course)
5. animal is milkable in the meantime
6. only females are trainable (ie, for war)

This is what I have so far, if you forsee problems please point them out:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hmm, they don't seem to be fighting correctly...

Ok... got the biting to work, now to fix the goring...

Alright, the biting and goring work, now just need to fix the hair problems...

Ok, done! Formatting (indentation) might be a little off but it works. No errors. Can't take on an elephant but it tore a goblin to pieces in about 5 seconds.

Did you pick pigs as the base animal for any reason than to get a Black Sabbath reference into Dwarf fortress?

I don't know anything about black sabbath.

Pigs are one of the most glaring omissions from dwarf fortress. What, you think dwarves eat beef? Are you kididng? Beef is for fat humans. Real dwarves eat pork.

Boars have long been associated with dwarves in various fantasy themes and whatnot...  But yes, the Black Sabbath reference is a bit funny.

Now, for the animal in question...  Was there a particular reason for only making the females war-capable?  For as ferocious as they are when defending their litter, I was under the assumption that the boars were also fairly large and aggressive...  And that they didn't need such convoluted reasons in order to charge something.

You could use a tiny little picture of Motorhead's similarly named mascot for the graphic.

I just felt like reversing it. Actually for balance reasons too - it's too easy if the males are all expendable since you only need 1 male to keep breeding going. More interesting if every lost war pig is a lost breeder.

No, real Dwarves eat rats... With Ketchup...

But, a very, very good idea.

I like your logic.

Did you pick pigs as the base animal for any reason than to get a Black Sabbath reference into Dwarf fortress?
Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds, oh lord yeah!

You know, the words "War Pigs" are never actually used in that song...

Heh, I've always been of the opinion that "lyrics don't rhyme with themselves"...

On the flipside though, Ozzy really is an inspired lyricist.  Plus, that song is a lot of fun.  But yeah, those first lines are a little...  Iffy.

EDIT:  On a more related note, I fully support this mod's intention, and I find the tactical quirk of making the breeding females the most warlike a very clever choice.  Well done.

Technically, the "masses" in question are homonyms, not the same word.  One is a large number of people, and the other is a religious ceremony.  The rhyme still doesn't ring true for me, though.

Dwarven war pigs amuse me.  And they have a shell?  They sound like a cross between a wild hog and a giant tortoise.
