Interconnected community pixel art
« on: April 09, 2010, 09:18:02 pm »

The idea behind this is simple:
Claim a square, and draw an image for it.

However, your image must connect with those around it at the time it is posted, so if someone uses an animation, you may have to animate yours to get it to line up properly.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Numbering, for convenience, is alphabetic across the top and numeric down the side.

Remember, it must fit at the time that it is posted, so be wary of claiming a square bordering another claimed but unfinished square.

Finally, I will make a local copy of your work, so don't think that you can secretly alter it after. If you do, your square will be rejected and reset.

At any time you may request that any of your own squares are reset and made available.

Edit: since some programmers count from 0, but most non-programmers don't, I'll clearly state that the numbers are 1 to 8, and the letters a to h.

Edit again:
Before anyone has to ask, yes, you can draw more than one square, or even combine a few unclaimed squares into something larger.

However, to prevent malicious space hogging, you will be restricted to four claimed-but-not-posted squares at once, unless you simply ask and people generally don't mind. I guess I can't stop people from claiming more than they should, but I can't stop someone from ignoring your claim and making their own also.

I always wanted to do one of these kind of things.

For consistency-sake, is there a fixed-palette we should all use, or is it a free-for-all? And is it MS Paint exclusive?

Any program, as long as it can save in MSpaint or GIMP compatible, lossless image formats. Oh, and also show up in browsers, and it must be exactly 64x64 pixels.

Colour palette? Only what can be found in 24-bit RGB. No alpha, and no fancy 48-bit high quality images.

Reccomended image type is PNG, since it has decent compression, lossless, and some image sites will automatically convert a bmp to a png, but any image type widely supported by browsers and the previously mentioned editors would work fine.

Alrighty then. This ought to yield some interesting stuff.

I know it may seem kinda one trick pony-ish, but I ought to make a render of Bloodfist traveling, and update it accordingly as the "map" evolves. I'm just debating whether to go all 4 slots and 128x128 it or just try to fit it in 64x64. For detail-sake, I'll try to go with my usual perspective direction (upper-top-left corner POV) and see how it works.

Plus, for what it's worth, I can also use it as an avatar render. I'll try to come up with more creative stuff later on.

If you do have an updating rendering, I reccomend a fixed border, so that any change will not invalidate later additions. Or, as the change would be more recent, later additions won't invalidate updated versions.

Sounds interesting. It's been long enough since I last did any pixeling. I wonder what to do, though. And where.

Looks awesome!

I would claim square with coordinates [4,4] and will draw in it after someone makes any of the surrounding ones, can I?

Everybody draw crossbowdwarves shooting off-panel, and dodging each others' bolts or getting shot.

Merged and Merged, however, to discourage "stick it wherever", such images will be put wherever random.org dictates, and if it can't(already taken, doesn't match), you WILL have to specify a valid location before it will be accepted.

Suggestion: Place images detailing which row/column it is next-to/above each row/column.

To avoid confusion.
