There was Wolf and Lion for DOS. You can find them at abandonware sites. I don't know what the rules are to linking to those, so you'll have to find them yourself.

There's Sim Ant, but I kinda doubt that's the sort of thing you're after.

EDIT: As for what insectcalm said, both those games are available on Abandonia so I would think that it's alright to link to those pages.

Wolf

Lion

Napalm is great if you enjoy hot and spicy foods. I personally enjoy some liquid nitrogen.

Wolf quest. I think I played it around the time it came out. As far as i remember it wasn't so great, but I don't know if they've updated it since then. It's been a couple years.

These two are good. They're less about trying to survive and more about constantly dying though. Subtle difference, but you'll understand what I mean if you try them (especially wolf).

By simple I mean no plot, more just random sandbox fun.

The jungle mud looks interesting but I can't connect to it.

This is absolutely true.  Along the same lines, you could play UnRealWorld, with no weapons or equipment or fire or anything.  Just pretend you're an arctic gorilla and try to kill everything by hand.

For some reason I can only remember games where you play as insects.Theres Bad Mojo, where you play as a cockroach... Well a guy transformed into a cockroach, but same difference.

Theres also Spider: The Game, which I can vaugely remember renting back when i was a kid. PS1 game though so you'd probobly be able to find it for a couple of quid.

And then theres Deadly Creatures for the wii. You can play as a tarantula or a scorpion apparently, havent played it myself though.

I tried wolfquest back when it was fairly new. It was a bit of a buggy mess back then. I seem to remember getting stuck rocketing around in circles backwards without moving my legs a few times.

It seems to have gone through a lot of updates since then, so maybe it works better now.
