Custom Workshop Workshop

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Description: WYSIWYG editor for designing the raws for a custom workshop.
(Not all raws, just the tiles and colors)  Lets you see how it will look at each stage of construction.  Comes with the default 16x16 CURSES font built in, but you can load any .BMP formatted DF font you like, keeping in mind that if its bigger than 16x16 it won't fit.

Accommodates up to 32x32 workshops, not that there's any reason for such a large workshop, right?

Source included.  Made in Lazarus.  (Yes, I know I'm a bad person.)  Should be trivial to recompile it for Linux or Mac.

Does this mean you intend to, or are you inviting someone else?

In any event, I am thoroughly impressed. Well done!

does it allow you to easily edit things like what it does, what skills it advances, make reactions, etc.etc? All the things necessary to make it work?

You don't say, I'm about to find out but that's the next step you need to take :P

I couldn't even get Lazarus cross compiling to 64 bit Windows, so I don't see it going well trying to cross compile to OSX/Cocoa ;)

As for making it edit everything about a workshop, there are already a number of utilities for editing raws.  The Eclipse plugin looks pretty slick, in particular.  I don't see a reason to duplicate functionality.  This utility is meant to edit the tiles, and give you a block of text you can copy&paste into your raw editor of choice.

Awesome idea. I had to use ASCIIdraw to see the look of my custom workshops before making them :P.

Don't think so, but adding those to the raws by hand ought to be trivial.

Oh, and if you don't recognise the archive format, it needs 7Zip to open.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

I agree, very useful. But I still think the next step is to make it so we can change what kinds of items it makes, skills it changes, etc.etc.

Dwarfs don't have issues.  Dwarfs merely have inspiration for the legendary artifact they will one day make.

Considering the general state of DF, I think Einstein and Newton are already rotating fast enough that you could hook them up to pumps and use them to kill Elves.

You control that from the Reactions, not the Workshop.  Reaction formatting asks for the workshop that uses the reaction and the skill needed (and raised) for it.

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.

Mech Workshop?

Toy around with enough raws or wait for the game to become advanced enough and you can manufacture your own colossus. It would be a sensible enough workplace do all the assembly work. I suppose it could work as an assembly area as well, just manufacture the parts first, and use such an area to construct the mech.

I think I found a use.
