Cyster's Distinct Dwarves - Dwarven Graphics Set

I love the flavor of Dwarf Fortress, and the dwarves become characters all their own, but I've always been rather nonplussed with most of the graphics sets out there.  I understand that 16x16 is a difficult canvas, but my personal tastes have always been more towards bold art and distinct characters.

Therefore, I decided to craft a graphics set for those with my tastes.

It's worth noting, first and foremost, that the dwarves in this set do not follow the traditional color schemes due to the direction I went with this (adding more detail and making the dwarves varied).  HOWEVER, all is not lost, as the profession subtypes can be clearly noted by their beards, which are the same across type.  All farmers have the same beard, all crafters have the same beard, and so on.

I realize this set isn't going to be for everyone as a result, and depending on whether or not I find the time and can get it to look up to my standards, I might create a version that incorporates the traditional colors in some manner.  For this release, though, it is what it is. ;)

A pre-packaged version with other graphics sets and tilesets might also be in the cards if there's a lot of demand for it.  Since it's just dwarves for the time being, though, I didn't put one together.

As this is a newly made set, medics are in play, as well as new offices like Arsenal Dwarf and Chief Medical Dwarf.

Man, I am in love with this set! I may replace my old one for the Genesis mod with this, it's really cool.

Did you use some reference? The default dwarf looks a bit like a hunter from WoW :P (green cape/costume).

The character design is REALLY great.

Hah, while I have played some WoW, this was mainly my own aesthetics coming out.  I dug the exaggerated style of Mike Mayday's dwarves, but I wanted more detail and individuality.

Can you draw some critters? I lack graphics for most underground stuff for the genesis mod, and if you could use your awesome skillz to help me with it, I would be happy :).

I'll look into it and see what I can do.  Scanning the raws (I haven't had much time to play the latest release, dammit) it looks like there's some fun stuff to depict.

I can't get the set to work: I tried to integrate your tileset with the Mayday pack. Do you think that there's anything I might be missing right off the bat?

Yep.  If you want to use these dwarves in DFG, you'll likely have to remove the Dwarf racial entries in the "graphics_mayday.txt" file in raw/graphics.  Start at [TILE_PAGE:DWARVES] and get rid of everything up til [TILE_PAGE:HUMANS].  The two txts are competing, and odds are Mayday's are winning out.

I managed to get some time today, so I've been working on an underground set.  I have all the adults done, still need to finish up the children and then get some proper testing in.  In the meantime, have a preview:



Creeping Eye, Voracious Cave Crawler, Elk Bird, Jabberer, and Gorlak.

Soon the underground will be very colorful indeed...

That is some good pixelart. Good style too.

Those underground monsters bring me back to the videogames of my youth. :)

This is easily the best graphics set yet. I'd love to see it complete.
