I'm just going to pretend this never happened, and ignore all knowledge and announcements about that.

Even though I never played X-COM*, I can say this will turn out horrible. You can NOT convert a game from strategy to FPS, It just doesn't work. you might be able to turn a RPG to a FPS because they have their similarities, but a strategy has very, very little similarities to a FPS.

*Don't tell me to buy it, just don't feel like it currently.

i have played x-com. I doubt they are converting the game to an FPS. They are making an FPS with the same story, same universe. It will be an FPS.

I would so have loved to been able to observe the conception of this idea.  It's hard to believe it was really so simple as someone just randomly thinking, "Hey look we have the rights to X-Com.  Let's make an FPS."

I suppose it could be explained as a natural reaction to the success of Fallout 3.  Fallout 3 revived a classic game of a different genre as a FPS and made a lot of money.  X-Com being revived as an FPS could make them a lot of money.  It's a bit like the Japanese military reforms during the 19th century.  My history teacher told a story about when they were first reforming the military.  They just ripped off everything from Germany (the dominant European military power at the time in their eyes.) including the language in which commands were given.  If you've seen the Last Samurai, it provides a very broken, inaccurate, and fantastical version of the story.  Just look at the Wikipedia article on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Samurai

That's because fallout 1&2 were RPG's, a strategy game is far more distant then a RPG is from a FPS, just try imagining Supreme Commander being a FPS.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly the thought process that went into X-COM: Enforcer.  One could hardly expect anyone who could conceive of the idea to have learned from the history of the last time someone had that idea.

You think this won't sell?  Maybe.  I'm just speculating about the reasoning behind this.  X-Com is old enough that the number of people who actually give a crap about it is minuscule compared to the number of people they could potentially get to buy it based solely on hype.

At least that's the way it seems to me.

Well, it might not be THAT bad. There's "the closest thing to X-Com" on GBA, "Rebelstar: Tactical Command". It bypasses the strategic aspect, focusing on tactical combat, and tells the story (mostly) from the perspective of a single player-led squad. That concept isn't too far from what X-Com could be translated into without significant trouble, and is likewise not too far from an FPS.

If the analogy helps (and if any of you played the thing), think of it as the same idea that's behind Enemy Engaged. The commanders are up to their own wacky hijinx, and you're stuck with the task of carrying out the missions. Except of course, in this case there's no actual grand strategy going on, just script.

It all boils down to mainstream gamers generally liking FPS and hating strategy games.

Those of us who actually like strategy games have problems, chief of which is that we do not buy into the hype, making us a bad market for a cheap company like 2K games.

And did anyone else cringe when they read the word, "reimagined"?  That is never a good word...

Truly sad news. Do they have to use x-com tm to make generic fps?!

That's a bit of a generalisation.
