I have sort of the opposite problem... I enjoy starting new fortresses, but once I get into my 4th/5th year, a combination of low FPS/large quantities of dwarves/lack of ideas ends up with me being bored. I end up abandoning a lot for this reason... It's why I wish you could retire a fort without abandoning it, and the fort would continue to run without your leadership... it wouldn't expand or anything, but it wouldn't die off either. That would free you up to make a new fort somewhere else(maybe even trading with your old fort) or visit a non-abandoned fort in adventure mode and see all the dwarves running to and through, working.

I am never happy with my fortress entrance, I set up too many opposite goals and always think I should have done better.

Same goes for my industrial zone.
