Blood with irrigation, and the military

So I just told my diminutive charges to irrigate my 5th farm plot using the simple channel + pond method, and I am greeted with the sight of great gobs of blood being used to irrigate (I'd recently knocked off some kind of Hill Titan and there was bits of dwarf and creature everywhere). Is this normal? While irrigating one's agriculture with the blood of defeated enemies oozes (excuse the imagery) of epicn, I'm wondering if this is a bug. Thoughts?

Second question: I'm using AncientEnemy's method for creating a military (for which I am eternally grateful. Link: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=54426.0) but several of the little buggers aren't training at all, and it's the same ones consistently. They go about their civilian jobs, but they've never trained once. Any ideas?
