Do floor grates prevent carp attacks?
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:17:23 am »

If I build a platform over a river with carp in it, and then install a floor grate in the platform, can I safely designate the platform around the floor grate as a Fishing Zone without having to worry about my d0rfs getting eaten by carp?

I know (from bitter experience) that wells don't prevent this, and that carp can freely attack up through a well if the well is only one z-level up from the river.  Wondering if grates work differently.

I'm pretty sure it will. However, your dwarfs may still get scared off by the carp.

Why are you fishing in areas with carp anyway? Just channel out a section of the river, install a fortification/vertical bars, and you can fish in the channel without large fish like carp getting through.

Vertical bars in the water (obviously dug before you flood it) can keep carp out of an area entirely, letting you fish and dig wells unmolested.

Yes.

Not as dangerous as before, but still dangerous.

The floor grates would eliminate one of the major dangers of carp, that being the "voluntarily charge/dodge into the water and drown because you can't swim" effect.  Not sure about them biting people, though.

Huh.  I kinda figured Toady would have went ahead and fixed this little issue with carp in this version.  I didn't realize they were still a threat.

Are carp even dangerous in the new version?
10 carp versus sea monster.

Carp won, sea monster was torn in half.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

Toady must keep this as a feature. Carp must be forever feared as the undisputed kings of the water.

Skelatal Whales should be the only thing more feared than Carp.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Zombie Carp should be the only thing more feared than Carp.

I hate this, but FTFY.
Zombie carp are nearly indestructible versions of carp, and which also happen to be able to walk on land.
Could there possibly be anything worse?

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
