Well, you've seen wooden snakes?
Imagine one of those. Unpainted. About 2 meters long. With a handle.
Or a long strip of leather, or reed rope, with wooden beads tied on at regular intervals.

I always figured that elves, with there freaky unnatural connection with nature could get plants to grow in certain shapes, such as growing a short sword, and thus could have a vine grow into chain links.
