Dang.  You really tried to cooperate, for all the good it did you.  The US isn't really giving any incentive not to go communist.

The showdown between Ehrlich and Correa seems to be the game's turning point. It's what really decides if your country becomes a leftist or a rightist one. LIMPIA and the military will make most left-wing reforms impossible or inefficient, and USA will become a huge dick if you let Correa win. Soldiers tampering with elections don't help either.

I also tried to do a moderate run - I survived to the end, but the country had begun to turn into a conservative hellhole after Ehrlich won. It's mainly because it seems that Correa is the only man who is both interested and able to deal with LIMPIA. After he is gone, even National Liberation won't propose anything useful to ban death squads. Despite constant pressure, Ehrlich essentially gives them free reign.

In the LP, it was questioned whether backing Correa in the civil war between the two factions can go wrong.  In fact, if you let the funding to Ehrlich's forces continue and ignore the growing hostility between the two army factions, Correa can actually lose when you finally decide to back him against Ehrlich.

Remember this game was created in and is set in the 1980's, with the "hidden agenda" of showing how the US was more interested in founding "Capitalist" countries than free ones.  The Pro-American fascist was preferable to the Communist that truly loved the people.

Except, of course, the Communist doesn't love the people, otherwise how did I get him to beat up food rioters and coffee workers? He and Ehrlich are just two sides of the same coin: they wants money and power (Ehrlich loves LIMIPA, and I think Correa want the State of Emergency).

Honestly, I think I hate everybody in Hidden Agenda other than Lady Mendoza. And the Bishop.  :-\

I view this game as a deconstruction of a myth that history is shaped by Great People. Powerful leaders who step up and save countries with their charisma and strength of will are somewhat uncommon. The real politics looks like that - it's full of half-way implemented solutions and hardly satisfying compromises.

I don't think a discussion about who is evil in "Hidden Agenda" is really productive. It really depends on your personal beliefs - people tend to demonize those who they don't agree with. Ehrlich may really believe that he is saving his country from communism - and perhaps he really does, National Liberation won't go anywhere with their reforms if he wins. Correa is a revolutionary - being one usually is a great way not to become rich and powerful. When the insurgency strikes, both have no reason not to propose martial law - what else could they do being military leaders? They could either admit to being inefficient, or claim it's all because their hands were tied.

And they may really believe they would get reactos/commies with all this power.

That's true, and I'm really worried my outbursts against National Liberation and my speculation on the motives of Padilla aren't really productive. I am however trying to figure out what are the Hidden Agendas that these Influentials and Politicians hold, in the hopes of manipulating these people to my advantage. That's pretty much it.

That must be Tropico, huh?  Sounds right up your alley :D

I'll vote B.  Useless politicians, they don't seem to do much besides overthrow you.  I guess they give you the chance to say no to the influentials, but that just doesn't seem worth it.  You think you can get Correah and Ehrlich thrown out?  Is that even possible?

As for the right vs left debate that we aren't starting, clearly the moderates are the real devils for playing those extremists against each other (:
Nevermind that the extremists on both sides seem to love killing citizens and destabilizing the government when they don't get their way.

It is probably too late to for you to win the elections.  Basically, you lost when you got the Popular Stability nomination instead of the National Liberation one.  Tacking to the extreme left for a bit would have secured you National Liberation backing instead, and you would have easily won the elections.  Firing your conservative minister would have kept you from getting impeached.

The key to a ministry run is to place ministers in offices that will do what you want them to do.  Instead of directly ordering the farms to be distributed to coffee farmers, for instance, you would place a moderate in the agricultural ministry.  Perhaps placing your conservative advisor as either the minister of the interior or ministry of defense may have helped with the elections going the way of Popular Stability.

My main complaint about the game is that half the time it seems the player is not reacting the the situations of the game world but rather the game system.  It seems a bit forced at times.

Yes, I could have won by bootlicking the NL goons...but I already did that in the last run, and I want to try something different.

My strategy for this election was based on exploiting a bug documented on the Something Awful forum:

Quote from: evilmiera
Wow...just had another peaceful election where I lost power. I guess that's the default ending or something...that is, if you pursue even remotely socialist ideasls.

Seems the US influence the election somehow if you agree to accept aid for them during the election process. Which resulted in a hilarious bug for me where rigged voting machines were being sent to Ehrlich...despite me having already defeated him ages ago and sent him into exile. Not to mention when I finally lost, not only did I lose the election, but somehow I also got a coup against me where someone who I'd already beaten showed up with the right-wing milita.

If I could somehow replicate that bug, then I might, MIGHT be able to prevent NL from winning, but it all depends on how Ehrlich is going to rig the elections. It's rather likely he'd rig it in favor of Popular Stability, and hence my endorsement of PS could have sealed my victory...

I think I basically lost when I endorsed the Soviet Union and did the military build-up. By making the Americans angered at me, I prevent them from offering me election aid.
