Help for Mac users?
« on: April 26, 2010, 07:23:09 pm »

Hi,

I just learned about DF today and it looks all kinds of awesome.  But after literally hours of digging (har har) I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how I'm supposed to run it on my Mac.  The Wikipedia article says DF is cross platform but the only Mac version I've managed to find is the one linked to here:

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=50514

Is that what I'm supposed to be using?

It would be nice if somebody who knew what they were doing put some info for Mac/Linux users somewhere that newbies might actually find it, like say the wiki or the Bay 12 homepage.

There's no mac port for the new version yet. You'll have to use an emulator until it's out.

On the bright side compatibility with Mac/Linux is being worked on right now! :)

See here for the development log, the "The SDL/OpenGL/40d# merge" referred to in the latest entry is a merge of the game with an optimized I/O code branch that also makes the game cross platform. So you'd only have to wait a few days or possibly weeks for a native Mac version. In the meantime there's Wine and VMs.

Install wine (not an emulator), play windows DF. Its an extra step that you won't have to do soon, but it does work. Barring that, 40d is mac native.

http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/  No further config is needed, but if you are also on a laptop, you'll need to rebind some keys in game.

There are a couple of threads on the forum about it.

I just wanted to add in that I play Dwarf Fortress on my unibody MacBook Pro using Wine.  I was expecting it to be very slow, but have found that it runs quite well, although if I run it natively in Windows XP (on the Bootcamp Partition), it is faster.

I think he's referencing the not-so-mac-favorable other thread on this board.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

I've been running this on my iMac since v31 came out. I use WINE Bottler, it's the easiest way I've found so far to run it. Remember that WINE is not an emulator, so I get the same framerate in WINE as I do running it natively in Windows. I believe this will only work with Intel Macs, so if you're still on a PowerPC you're probably out of luck.

WINE Bottler:

I use Mike Mayday's preconfigured graphics set:

I also use Baughn's accelerator for better FPS:

Even Dwarf Therapist works in WINE:

What the hell is he talking about?

There are two keys, tops, whose functions are in different positions.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

Don't start an operating system flamewar. Every time someone mentions they play this game on Linux or Mac, some blowhard has to start a flamewar and the mods have to lock the thread. There's no reason to even bring up the subject. We're here for dwarf fortress, not OS arguments.
