Yeah, you could buy some decent motors or a basic sensor array for under 50. Both would provide a huge boon the bot.

Er, what I mean is, can we buy the entirety of the parts that we used in the Beetle for less than $50? That is, is it possible to manufacture and sell Beetles at a profit, or are the parts worth more than the robot itself?

The problem is the beetle is a novelty, more artistic than useful - you might get a decent price for one, or two, but the market will very quickly be saturated.

Still, yeah, you could probably rebuild it for under 50 dollars. Maybe 30 or 40.

Sell it to the dude.
Work on money infrastructure - secure online account, erasing the trail, etc.
Look for cheap Beetle parts and better parts, esp. grabber parts, upgraded motors, treads, potential weapons

Do we really need to buy books on psychology? It's a common enough subject that a library should have a few useful books on it.

I think we need to buy them for reasons of game mechanics. Otherwise, what would be the point of getting two free books in the first place?

There are a few reasons for the starting books compared to library books, which are available-

Starting books can be used right away without visiting anywhere.
You can sell starting books
A library card requires proof of residence. Which, as a matter of fact, you don't have.
You can still go to the library and read one there, but the last bit does require some sort of experiment with the book as reference, so that might be a bit difficult in a public library.
