Skeletal Fortress (Possible Spoilers)
« on: October 06, 2010, 06:10:11 am »

So I just introduced my friend to Dwarf Fortress - he hasn't even got the hang of the military screen, however, he has stumbled across this listed in (R):

Upright Cotton Candy long sword at z-level 84

This is his first embark, he hasn't got a clue what's going on. Naturally though, he goes to explore and find the sword in the fucking stone. When he gets to z-level 85 he finds that 84 is primarily made of slade. I instantly shit myself. Anyway, we manage to find a place that isn't made of slade and dig towards the sword, only to find the magma sea and also something of some interest...

A fucking skeletal elephant and buzzard tea party.

I have never, ever experienced this. There's an entire room complex made of slade full of zombies and skeletons, all guarding this mythic sword, which is sat next to a glowing door.

Is this shit normal? Or have we struck something awesome? Will post pictures/save if requested.

I thought this initially, is it usual for it to be full of skeletal/zombie animals though?

Cheers for clearing that up. :)

Yes that's normal, although the type of undeads varies a lot.

Do you get to keep the sword once it's out? If so that would make for an awesome weapon for a swordsdwarf, if you allow such abominations before armok to exist in your army.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's my understanding that they only occur within Mountain biomes, so they're just like the HFS back from 40d except that you can't make them show up during embark.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

They occur everywhere. My last one was in a completely flat forest.

A question. Is this sword available in Adventurer mode? I know it's technically a building, but it'd be awesome to yank a sword out and unleash a horde of demons.

You could bite into your computer screen, chipping teeth and fucking up the screen.

Yes, yes it would. Killing clowns with the sword in the stone in adventure mode sounds completely awesome.

Haha OP reminds me of myself first time I found one of these.

Holy shit, what are those zombie-filled slade halls doing here?
Holy shit, there's a blue sword just standing there!
