Hey, I'm Starting a Mod, Anyone Interested?
« on: May 02, 2010, 07:16:12 am »

I'm going to expand the amount of guns in the game and change them up a bit to make them all behave differently... I couldn't picture a revolutionary without using the old outdated crap left-over from WW1 so I have finally (after much playing around) got a fully functional M1 Garand in the game... It has some pros and cons over the other weapons.

PROS
-----

* Cheapest rifle at $300.
* Good stopping power, plus the power to sever the occasional limb.

CONS
-----

* Won't fit in with disguises (who the hell carries an M1 around?)
* Ammo is quite expensive, $35 for an eight bullet clip.
* Low ammo, eight bullet clip.

So what you get is a cheap rifle that does good damage but is highly inefficient for operations, probably good for outfitting your grunts with, saving the better weapons for your higher ups!

I'm thinking of modding in FALS, tommy guns and other pre-modern weaponry. Anyone think they'd like this :)?

Hm, don't conservatives use guns?  Mod in melee weapons instead!  :P

All kidding aside, it seems cool.  Hm, the biggest advantage of modern weapons over older ones is weight, and since LCS does not measure carrying capacity of our grunts, pre-vietnam weapons actually would perform better than their modern replacements (as the trend had been to reduce firing range to reduce weight, thus allowing the carrying of more ammo and other things).

But the guy from the most recent Jagged Alliance LP should be here soon.

I don't want to sound overly judgemental, but the cons aren't real. No rifle allows disguises, and if you use one, you don't need a disguise. Money in LCS inflates very quickly as you get cracking with regular raids, so expensive ammo clips won't do any good for the balance. The clip size, however is a real setback (even those 10 bursts provided by AK47 seem to run out fast), but not very dramatic when having a squad of 6 trained liberals.

However, I suggest that you keep working on it, in any case. Creativity is why we have liberalism in the first place! The current LCS weapon system is rather boring and at least I'd like to see more specialized weapons in the future: stealth hits with knifes or SMAPs (Sileced Movie Agent Pistol), covering fire with SMG or assault rifle, kneecap shots (yay) and such... If I have time next summer I'll familiarize myself with C++ and then I can help Jon code all the interesting features instead of just suggesting them ^^.

I'm pretty pissed at myself.

I had a 8 or so paragraph reply written going into huge detail about WW1 Weaponry, but I accidentally kicked the surge protector switch and turned off my computer. Donkey Balls.

Just ask me a question, and I can guarantee a long, well written answer.

I should note, no bullet will ever rip off a limb ever. No exceptions. None.

No, not even the 50. BMG, no especially not the .50AE from the infamous Desert Eagle.

Also, I should note that the Mosin Nagant Bolt Action Rifle was made in the millions upon millions, and to this day are very common and often a novice shooters first rifle because they are so damn cheap. You can get them around 80-200 dollars.

Garands are kind of expensive IRL. They cost 800 for a good one, 500 for a piece of shit pulled out of a ditch in Korea.

No, new rifles are not generally lighter than old ones. In fact they mostly weigh the same if not more than older rifles.

What's really heavy is the ammo.

Older rifles should get much more range.

I would like to note, suppressors on rifles ARE STILL LOUD AS FUCK AND WILL HURT YOUR EARS IF YOU SHOOT WITHOUT HEARING PROTECTION.

Silenced pistols are still kind of loud too. Depending on the pistol, it can sound like someone knocking on your door really hard. Point is it will still attract attention.

Actually I've encountered several sources suggesting that the K98 has the capability to take off a limb.

Also in a game where you can release mutant fireball breathing bunny-rabbits I'm hearing a lot of bitching about accuracy... :|

Your next goal should be to make the 9mm and the .45 distinct weapons.  I have suggested before that the 9mm be more accurate and less damaging than the .45 colt.

Unfortunately, LCS does not represent range.  In fact, the close-quarters combat of LCS reflect the main reasons for inventing the Submachinegun and machine pistols.

In a way, the M4 should be more accurate than the M16 not due to accuracy on the firing range but rather due to the M4 weighing less and being smaller, and thus the M4 is slightly easier to move around in close-quarters.

While the idea of including silencers is cool, the fact is that even if they really worked, LCS simply does not represent noise as affecting stealth.  It doesn't matter if you kills someone in one round with a knife or shoot them 18 times with an AK...everyone on the site will know.

"Actually I've encountered several sources suggesting that the K98 has the capability to take off a limb."

As someone who's living is firearms, and greatest love in life is firearms, let me say "HAW HAW NO". Ask any real firearms expert if the little 7.92x57mm round can remove a limb. That is NOT how bullet wounds work, at all, and I am offended that someone who would call himself a respectable source for firearms information would say such a ludicrous thing.

"Also in a game where you can release mutant fireball breathing bunny-rabbits I'm hearing a lot of bitching about accuracy... :|"

I would like to note, I don't give two shits about how realistic your mod is, I'm just telling you how it is so you can better your mod and minimal knowledge of firearms.

"In a way, the M4 should be more accurate than the M16 not due to accuracy on the firing range but rather due to the M4 weighing less and being smaller, and thus the M4 is slightly easier to move around in close-quarters."

This is a good idea, it's the only good way to represent the carbines advantages over the rifle.

"Your next goal should be to make the 9mm and the .45 distinct weapons.  I have suggested before that the 9mm be more accurate and less damaging than the .45 colt."

Good idea, .45 ACP is a much heavier and wider bullet than the 9x19mm round, and as such is less accurate and more powerful. Also note, the magazine capacity of a .45 auto is likely to be around 50%-75% the capacity of a 9x19 firing weapon. The 9x19 will be more accurate, less powerful, and have a larger magazine of course. 9x19 ammo should be cheaper than .45 ACP.

A few likely candidates for a poor left wing organization, from most expensive to least.

Colt Government Model 1911 .45 - 600 USD
Glock 19 9x19mm - 500 USD
Hi-Point .45 - 150 USD
Hi-Point 9x19mm - 150 USD

There are dozens more guns I could think of, but you don't give a shit.

Now there's a round that might manage to take out a limb, albeit on a really small person. The explosive help :P

Down flames, down!

The13thRonin and UristMcGunsmith: Calm Down.

The13Ronin: It is your mod, so feel free to ignore anything that anyone else says.  But be nice about it.

UristMcGunsmith: I suspect The13Ronin is more interested in old WWI rifles than handguns, specifically in the "common" versions of firearms as seen in popular media.

Oh Tilla, your photo isn't coming through.

If pre-modern weaponry is your game, then consider the almighty Colt Single Action Army. And while I am on revolvers, the Smith & Wesson Model 500 does this:

What Arch-Conservative organization wouldn't love that?

In more Elite Liberal weapons, you could consider making Riot Guns, TAZERs, or other less-than-lethal weaponry to help making kidnapping dangerous Conservatives safer. I always hate finding a member of the CSS and having to choose between losing a few Liberals beating them senseless or risking an insta-kill on them with trained weapons.

Single Action Army, Colt M1911, FN 1903 (rare), Mauser C96, Luger P08, Nagant M1895 revolver, Reichsrevolver 11mm

All the WW1 era pistols I can think of, off the top of my head.

I know Smith & Wesson produced a revolver for WW1 use, but I can't remember it.

Yeah, i've fired the S&W 500. Was very fun. The serrations on the top of the barrel helped recoil a lot, I've fired smaller caliber weapons that have had more recoil.

I fired it during the day, so no rad fireball for me.

And yeah, a 25mm explosive round is likely to destroy a limb, but 25mm is out of the realms of firearms and into the realm of anti-material weaponry.
25mm is = 1.00 caliber. Twice as wide as the .50 caliber round.

I've fired the Lahti 20mm anti-tank (or the anti-everything) rifle a few times. It's fucking LOUD LOUD LOUD.

Tilla, that is not an anti-personel rifle. That is an anti-materiel rifle. That beast is supposed to be used on armored trucks and tanks. Don't get me wrong, I hate Conservatives as much as the next Liberal, but that is just plain overkill.

Killing is wrong
Conservatives must be killed
...
Therefore, there is no overkill.
