Finding the rare expansive cavern
« on: May 03, 2010, 10:24:47 pm »

Hey guys, what are your tips to gennig/finding those huge, open caverns I see on DFMA?

For example, the fantastic Sinkfurnace!

I've tried embarking in different biomes, different rock layer etc but I still just find the normal, crowded caverns. Like a maze of twisty passages, all alike.

Any tips? Tweaking the worldgen? Specific things I can look for in the embark profile? Or just keep digging?

There should be a worldgen option you can tweak to increase the cavern openness.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Yeah except I for one can't figure out whether high numbers make the cavern more open, or vice versa.

You need high openness and low passage density. Openness controls how much the cavern cover the layer and passage density determine whether the cavern is made from a bunch of maze-like passages or open areas.

Keep embarking til you start with 30 fps instead of 100, it means there's a cavern full of water draining somewhere down below.  Unless you just always start at 30 fps, I hear that happens too :(

just as alexwazer says, 0/0 Cavern Layer Passage Density and 100/100 openness will get you wonderful big caverns
