If Dwarf Fortress was a AAA release...
« on: May 09, 2010, 07:13:20 pm »

I read this article on Kotaku wherein Super Mario screens are altered to reflect trends in modern gaming, and I thought - photoshops or text - that a similar approach could be taken to Dwarf Fortress.

So I ask Bay12, if DF was being published by one of the big software companies...
-what corners would be cut?
-what "features" would be added?

My contributions:
- One variety of stone.
- Undo key.
- Worldgen seeds available as DLC.
- Initial Xbox/PS3 exclusivity with buggy, DLC-free PC port released a year later - no Mac, Linux support... ever.

Hit points, no dismemberment, booze replaced with fruit drinks, no butchering, no circus.

To lower the ESRB rating and increase sales!

Yer confusing Movies with games. M rated games garner very strong sales, stronger then T or E games.

Movies is where R sees a drastic drop in sales.

I don't know, if a company like Paradox Interactive made it, it would be pretty damn good...although unlike DF, it would be semi-unplayable until the bugfixes came out rather than just amusingly buggy.  The Hearts of Iron series has been pretty impressive in its depth of gameplay, strategy, and sheer potential for modding.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

It wouldn't exist. Plain and simple.

Most publishers would probably demand that the game is nerfed a lot,
so that even people with low intelligence are able to play it (and therefore might buy it)

Most publishers would probably demand that the game is nerfed a lot made completely unrecognizable from the original,
so that even people with low intelligence and/or "casual gamers" are able to play it
Fixed for accuracy.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Haha, I played a bunch of Mass Effect 2 this evening, that was a triple A title that had alcohol and explosions.

Full body dismembering? Mothers using their babies as shields? Otherworldly procedurally generated horrors lurking beneath the earth?

The entire experience would be ruined by a tutorial which tells you how every system in the game works right from the beginning. People wouldn't get to have fun experiences like trying to pump all the water out of an aquifer or finding out regular stone is not, in fact, magma safe!

And of course a checkpoint save system to interrupt every few seconds. "Booze production successfully started. Autosave in progress."

Then there would be 3D graphics which would be impressive looking, but not allow you to build anything cool (kind of like graphics in The Sims 3).

No moddability, and DLC consisting of new creatures to put in the game.

A bad storyline about saving the world/kingdom from evildoers.

No moddability
I can't imagine a mod-less DF! what other game were you talking about?
