It's true.
Also sulfur isn't really a gas, at room temperature at least.  It does stink though  :)

Would it become a gas if it was in a magma chamber?  :) Thats why i mentioned volcano, i only ever have heard of sulfur gas being near a volcano.

Sounds like a great way to blow up your fortress! I love it!  :)
And trapping a dragon in a gas-filled room would certainly be hilarious.

BTW, I like these ideas, but would not be disapointed if they didn't show up any time soon, if ever.

Seems like most people like this idea. Maybe the designer of this game might add it in.

Gotta think positive ?  :)

I think there should be oil pockets as well.

I definitely want Knockermen in DF.

Anything that makes DF dwarves closer to Discworld is good in my opinion, simply because the Discworld dwarves are so awesome.  The culture is just so fleshed out and perfect and detailed!

Well, it would be a plus if dwarves realized that fire burns before this ever were added.  I mean, you're building along, and the fortress suddenly fills with smoking (as in on fire XD) dwarves who continue whatever they were doing until they drop dead...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_gas#Sources

Natural gas occus naturally underground just about only around coal and oil deposits. Which does make it realistic, as it is pretty common around these deposits. But in general I think that in DF it should be treated just as poison, flammable gas.

Oh, and have you actually seen mine ventilation shafts? I think it's safe to say that a proper shaft needs to be fairly big to allow enough air exchange, i.e., removing tiles of rock, forming verticle shafts, is about the right scale.

In DF, the only way I can of right off hand to actually build a vertical shaft is to build single tile channels downward, with an up/down staircase for your dwarf to stand on while tunneling.

Oh, and underground natural gas isn't deposited in gas form; it's liquid that evaporates in air, and the liquid is really just droplets that exist within the coal/oil deposits. So, technically I suppose each tile of DF coal should produce some amount of natural gas as it evaporates.

Someone unnecessary thread resurection, but thought I'd add the following:

The rotten-egg smelling gas you find near volcanoes (amongst other places) is Hydrogen Sulphide, rather than sulphur. Hydrogen sulphide is both toxic and flamable (as well as very strong smelling!).

Sulphur is solid at room temperature, melts at about 400C and vapourises at about 1000C.  So whilst in theory you could inhale sulphur you wouldn't be able to smell it as a) it's odourless and b) your nose would be on fire.

So, those egg-smelling natural hotsprings are toxic?  How toxic, exactly?  BRain-damagning tocix?

And make sure not to light a cigarette.
