I am behind the idea of setting off an enormous bomb onto a sea covered in flammable material spread over a huge area.

At this point it's worth a try.

If they take a picture, set it to some popular dime-a-dozen bubblegum crap and flog the DVD for 10 bucks a pop they might be able to recoup their losses.

I can't say I have ever seen steam start a fire.

Yeah? Well that stupid goddamn program blew up my computer a few months back.

More seriously, I don't know what the effect would be of a nuke dropped on an area covered in oil. Quick, somebody who can pretend they know with a reasonable degree of believability hop in and act like they do!

You fucking rang?

For the detonation to have any effect on sealing the leak, it would have to be way down near the bottom, or at least considerably under water.  The blast generated, including hotter-than-the-sun locus, would flash a huge amount of water into steam.  Steam can be different temperatures, and combined with plain old radiant heat from the blast, could ignite surface oil, and certainly any oil in the water near the blast (although it would pretty much vaporize instantaneously).  I'd be more worried about all that steam condensing into oily rain somewhere farther down the coast, but the whole area around the blast is pretty fucked too.

The real problem with setting off a bomb of any magnitude in the heart of the oil leak would be the blast itself - observe the famous Bikini Atoll underwater test blast.  Those little black things under the water-cloud?  Those are motherfucking battleships.  Now imagine that, but full of flaming crude oil.

I don't understand how it could have any conceivable benefit.  Don't large explosions make holes bigger, not smaller?

I think the idea would be to collapse the leaking pipe, and compact the whole area around it, thus shutting off the leak without risk of catastrophic fracture.  It's very much based in a cartoon version of physics, but so is every other method underway to cap the leak.  I'm not advocating it mind you.

It'll make me look more self-indulgent than you.  Especially if you included a note about how I urged you like a spoiled child to quote me.

Yeah, I don't see it compacting the hole so much as creating an even bigger hole and destroying the ability of the sea floor to contain the oil.  Maybe the idea is to melt a bunch of sand into a giant glass seal or something, I don't know, it's dumb.

You wouldn't set it off on top of the leak, you would put it off to the side and hope that it shifted enough land that the hole wasn't continuous anymore. Of course, moving large quantities of earth is not exactly what bombs specialise in, they are more about breaking up structures, but the water might help... I would also expect it to be set off much deeper than a test against surface vessels, so the effects on us would probably be quite slight, not that the deep-ocean ecology is entirely separate...

they would probably just dump a load of high-explosives in a hole near the shaft and try to collapse the tunnel that way...

Exactly. A nuke would only be required if you need to shift a VERY large amount of land, specifically so that the blast does not touch the main reservoir. It'd be detonated way underground, causing a miniature earthquake that will collapse the leaking well. The principle worked on land, why would it be so different underwater?

I'm only really guessing here, but I think that the presence of water would make it a bit different.
