Bubble Tank Defense
« on: June 01, 2010, 03:21:50 pm »

So, I went onto this game --being a Tower Defense fan from the genre's origin on Warcraft III Battlenet-- expecting a failed attempt to mimic greatness with a flash game. And I was wrong. It is indeed challenging and complex, and more importantly the mechanics are very difficult to overwhelm/break.

http://armorgames.com/play/4962/bubble-tanks-tower-defense

After a few levels, I decided to try the one-way infinite challenge. I made it to level 1000. I could have gone on much longer if I hadn't sent the last 100 levels at myself simultaneously, and if I hadn't lost all but 2 lives in the first few levels, or if I hadn't destroyed my anti-air tower and rebuilt it wrongly, or of I'd simply juggled the creeps. That's a lot of mistakes. But hey, it was a first try and it's a sure bet I don't want to try it again.

My challenge to you, fellow Bay12ers, is to beat me. You'll need to play the short tutorial to unlock the infinite one-way challenge. I think the score counter broke during my game, so you can use the remaining cash tally as your marker. I don't think that one looped. That would just be insane.

So, who will be the best!? Certainly I won't sit at the top long.

Edit: Ah, I forgot to mention: this could take around half an hour to an hour, depending on your success. You have the option of sending the waves of enemies as quickly as you want, which is what will keep you sane and prevent it from taking forever.

One thing that always bothered me about flash tower defense games as the perfect pathfinding. I remember where one could build a 'pocket', which the enemies would walk into before realizing the pocket is not the proper path, and turn around in a huddle and get properly confused because they collide with eachother. No flash game has ever replicated this, which I found was an interesting strategy that I always loved in the original tower defense games.

There are lots of lovely things to be had with the great WCIII map editor program and all of that professional-grade base code to work with that you just don't have when you are building from the ground up. However, speaking objectively I don't know if the old pathfinding mistakes were errors or intentional.

This guy did a really good job. It's worth a look just to play, even if someone doesn't feel like taking on a forum challenge at the moment.

One. I'm pretty sure that this belongs in other games.
Two. It's made by hero interactive, right? They have a whole team of people.

I like their other bubble tank games, but haven't played this one yet.

Well, with all of this help, I'm sure to get this right eventually. Migrating topic.

And yes, it's from Hero.

Aye. Though sometimes it makes it too easy. I've played a couple of tower defense maps that makes your builders and buildings invincible in Starcraft, so the enemies don't stop to kill them. Unfortunately, this meant you could plug the holes between very cheap buildings with builders, and no ground forces could get through. But yeah, confusing enemy AI is supposed to be a part of TD.

It may be just that I've only played the more recent TD maps, but I recall most maps jusy blowing up your towers if you didn't leave a clear path...

Indeed, those were the maps I played. You had to leave a gap, but you could mess with enemy AI fairly well. Except for in Starcraft with Siege Tanks and Ultralisks, both of which when stopped for merely a second would LOSE THEIR FUCKING MINDS and wreck everything.

This game gets extremely easy once you figure out how to make, mega mega towers. When I can splash the entire screen for 30,000 damage, that also slows and weakens, it gets very tedious. Also, Never delete all your range towers because you want to see if mega mega mega towers are possible

The challenge later on becomes rebuilding your defenses to be more effective while keeping them active. It is tedious, though. Like I said: the ability to send 100+ waves at yourself simultaneously prevents the tedium from becoming overwhelming, and prevents the game from lasting hours.

They aren't.  You can go into Sandbox Mode and just try it out.

Anyway...
