Well, I'd probably hold Portal 2 to be something that I'd consider "to be of the same quality that they produced in 2004/2005".

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

I wouldn't. It's nothing compared to HL2 in its original context. I only completed Half Life 2 once in 2004, but from then on I saw HL2 as the benchmark. I wished games could be that good. I remember... when I was playing it, it felt like I had gone into the future and brought back a game. It felt so advanced compared to what I'd been playing before that it wasn't actually meant for my eyes, that it was almost forbidden.

So you want Valve to be making something staggeringly impressive all the time? Sounds like some unrealistically high expectations. Especially given how big of a deal the Source engine was.

Not all of the time, just a new engine at some point soon that is genuinely groundbreaking. I don't see that as being beyond Valve's abilities.

Ok, I admit it. I just want Half Life 3.

Yes, I don't think it is realistic to expect any group of creators to maintain the quality of their Magnum Opus constantly.

Fact is, Valve is head and shoulders above the rest of the industry, and have definitely reached the sort of enlightened self-interest that allows both consumers and producers to be happy. How they made more money on TF2 when they sold it for $0.01 then they did when it was first released comes to mind.

Perhaps more importantly, Valve is privately owned, and they likely aren't going to sell out or go public any time soon, especially considering they've been rejecting EA's buyout offers for years, including the time they were offered one billion dollars.

Then rejoice, because Source Engine 2 is heavily in development.

I do have some dark feelings about that though. If I recall correctly there's a game coming out for one of the next-gen consoles that is allegedly running on Source 2, but in my opinion it did not seem all that impressive. The game involved mechs or something and reminded me of Borderlands crossed with Call of Duty and Halo 3. Was that just a rumour?

I doubt it was Source 2 if there's gameplay videos of it. It might have been the modified version of Source that Portal 2 runs on maybe?

It was probably going to be something about two half-lives.

Ingenious is the word you were looking for, Naxzy.

And can someone explain how Google has gotten evil?

Last I heard their business model is "Be awesome so people keep using our stuff, sell ad-space on our stuff, profit". Being evil would destroy that because of the first part...

Is it the data-mining? It's the data-mining, isn't it?
