Useful things to think about considering I've been thinking about getting into the business.
Gotta ask: how's your peripheral vision? It's one of (many) things that you'll have to pass a medical exam on in order to get a CDL.

Well... I didn't think about that. Given I'm missing an eye I'm pretty sure I might fail that actually now that I think about it.

Even without peripheral vision being a problem, the depth perception I'm almost sure you'd need...

Which is why I asked about it, yeah.

Don't give up yet though. Maybe try calling up local trucking schools to see who they get to run their medical exams, and ask those doctors. It could be a case-by-case thing, and if you have a safe driving record they might give you a shot anyway.

Well. My record is clean besides an accident that I've made up for in a few ways. So maybe I could manage.

Also I will say, as someone who spends a lot of time on shooting ranges. The importance of depth perception is massively overstated.

Try to emphasize the fact that you are a marksman, then. Tell the doctor how you can hit your target without depth perception, show him your prizes if you have any, that sort of thing.

Well no one does any competitions here but if I can find out who the examiner is going to be I suppose seeing if I can invite them out shooting might not hurt.

Even Texas probably has some areas where there isn't much shooting going on. Austin, maybe.

Local area I mean. Not statewide. I can't travel much. At least not currently.

Also I will say, as someone who spends a lot of time on shooting ranges. The importance of depth perception is massively overstated.
Stereopsis is actually mostly useful for close range depth perception, mostly things like picking up objects, catching and throwing a ball. Stuff that involves things that are right in front of you mainly.

It gets progressively less and less useful the further away an object gets (because the difference between the perspectives of your two eyes becomes less and less), it actually becomes all but useless by the time something is 10 metres away from you (if wikipedia is to be believed here). At which point you rely on all the other depth cues you have, and there are a lot of monocular cues.

So I wouldn't say the importance of depth perception is massively overstated, but the importance of two eyes for depth perception is.

Whoops, sorry, that was meant to go to the article on depth perception. It should be fixed now.
