So I just "beat" Gone Home. I don't think I can even call that a game since it doesn't have any actual gameplay. The story wasn't really all that interesting either. I might as well have gone to the library and checked out a YA novel, at least that doesn't cost $20. I feel like it would have worked better as a book instead of a game. It wasn't even marketed as a visual novel. How did it get such good reviews?

The number of games these days with no gameplay whatsoever is horrifying.

The number of games these days with no gameplay whatsoever is horrifying perfectly normal.
There we go. Though I guess you get inured to it over the years or something.

Gaming has always had shit games.

Art "games" without gameplay are like paintings without paint. I'd beg game devs to stop, but I imagine the schedule of art "game" development goes like this:
51% Story Writing
48% Art Development (If it's one of those games that "intentionally uses retro graphics in order to draw the viewer into the world of the game via familiar imagery", reduce this to 1%)
1% Development using Unity/Source SDK/Inform 7/Gamemaker.
So why stop?

This is why I consider Hotline Miami an art game and not, say, Dear Esther. Hotline Miami had a message to tell and told it admirably. Dear Esther was a walking simulator no matter how good the writing was.

Erm mah gerd it's like the last RPS article discussion I just read followed me in to the RAEG thread. (They just reviewed "The Mountain" which released on Steam today, and the game vs. not game debate rages fiercely.)

Apparently, I've got to sign up for Track & Field, Band, Knowledge Bowl, and at least one math contest as extracurriculars.

EDIT: Forgot the First Aid thing.
I'm assuming your parents made you do it?

Either way, that kinda sucks. At least you'll have some more questionably useful skills after you're done.

First Aid is useful.
The rest are--just depends on how you'll utilize it.

I wonder if people debated whether or not something was a film, or a TV show, or a book, back in the day those were relatively new...

Not likely, because those didn't have anything to have their definition blurred with.
You're never going to manage to make a book that lacks certain qualities of a book. It's paper with words printed on it.
