I fucking hate replacement swears. Just fucking say fuck you fuck fuck FUCK.
I almost never alter my behavior around others purely out of "courtesy," but euphemisms is one place I actually do.

I'll say "frick" instead of "fuck" in the right company. Not because I think "frick" is somehow less offensive or a different word, but because it's too small a detail to really care about, and the confrontation that would arise if I used a "bad" word would be too much bother to be worth it.
I'm specifically talking about the usage in science fiction here.

Righto~

Carry on then.

Well I guess I'll point out that depending on the media, your rage might be better directed at the censors rather than the writers.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

My rage is directed at the moments when it's unnecessary, and you're making up words because "it's just like that thing you know in real life, except in the future!"

I think it's more "feck" or "frel" or "frak" that's the problem.
They annoy me too. (Apart from 'feck', if it's an Irishman doing the swearing.)

I say feck from time-to-time. Is a Northern Irish man also exempt from said annoyance? :P

What, you don't have a problem with fantasy works replacing swear words? Only sci-fi? What's the difference?

Rockcrete. Amalgamations of modern words to make them sound future while not being different at all.

Knuck (fuck). A replacement of a swear with one that has far less impact that ruins otherwise perfectly serious dialogue, while also not even making sense as a swear at all.

Those things. Annoy me.

So, it's nothing to do with sci fi, except that it is where you encounter these denatured swears?

I don't mind 'em at all. The less people who swear over trivial things the better. For, in a bad mood the swearer has nothing to fall back onto except a list of his usual obscenities. One normally clean-tongued, in a bad mood, can shock and startle those around him with his knowledge of the darker side of vocabulary. Or so I've found. :P

Sci-fi is just the most visible offender, because it has a need to make things that are both familiar and futuristic. It doesn't come up in fantasy as often because fantasy is backwards looking for the most part, to things people have never been familiar with, be that swords or dragons.

But it still happens in fantasy too. Usually with animals. (Owlbear anyone?)

Also combination words just sound inherently futuretech.

I don't mind it at all. It's an easy way to show how language has developed further on from 2000s English and still keep it understandable.

New materials often are given names which are combinations of two existing words, anyway. Satisfycing as a modern word is literally the combination of satisfying and sufficing.
